Humans travelled into space for the first time in the 1960s. The Soviet Union sent the first man into space in 1961, and just eight years later, the USA landed the first astronauts on the Moon. Today, the only manned space flights are those to Earth orbits. A manned mission to Mars may be the next chapter in the story of human space flight.
