CHAPTER FIVE,
justice
EMMA WATCHED THE SUNRISE, and heard her neighbors get up and drive off for work. She hadn't bled out all the way, but she felt herself starting to get drowsy. She had gotten home around 2:30, and it was now 7. She was laying in a pool of her blood going in and out of consciousness. She knew she probably wouldn't make it in to work, she just hoped someone would find her before she bled out. Her co-workers were begging to worry about her. She was always there early, but this morning, she was nowhere to be found, "Have you seen Emma?" Erin asked Jay as they got their morning cup of coffee.
"Not yet. Maybe she's just late." Jay shrugged.
"Jay, in the entire time we've known her, have you known her to be late?" Erin raised a brow.
"Well, no, but we don't really know her that well." Jay pointed out.
"I guess." Erin nodded, "Something doesn't feel right."
"Hey, have you guys seen Emma?" Antonio asked them, joining them in the break room.
"You find it weird, too, right?" Erin asked.
"Yeah, she's never late." Antonio nodded in agreement.
"You wanna pop by? See if she's okay?" Erin asked Jay.
"Sure." Jay nodded, setting the cup down on the counter, and walking out to grab his jacket.
The two drove to her building and walked up towards her door. Jay knocked on the door, and tried the door handle, only to find that the door was open. They both looked at each other, reaching for their guns. He pushed the door open and saw Emma laying on the floor in a pool of her blood.
He forget about protocol, and instead rushed towards her, checking for a pulse. He found one, faint and weak, but there. Erin cleared the rest of the house and grabbed his radio, "Lincoln 5021, emergency. We have an officer down with three gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Roll an ambulance to my location."
"Copy that Lincoln 5021." Dispatch responded.
Emma's eyes opened, and they locked on Jay's, "Hey, Emma. It's me, it's Jay."
"J-Jay." She mumbled weakly, then began coughing up blood.
"No, no, don't try to talk." He shook his head, "Where's the ambulance?" He asked Erin.
"Two minutes out," Erin told him.
"Okay, you just gotta keep your eyes open for two minutes." He told her, putting more pressure on her wound, wincing when she let out a whimper in pain, "Keep her talking." Erin bent down next to her.
"Hey, hey. Do you remember who did this to you?" Emma nodded weakly, "Do you know his name?"
"H-His name..." Her eyes began to close.
