Stepping into the Light

The bar was completely silent, save for the soft snoring of a passed out man in the corner of the room. All eyes were on Elizabeth as she stood in the light.

And then, they cheered.

The men in the tavern hooted and shouted, and a blush crept to Elizabeth's cheeks. She had not yet moved, yet everyone looking at her seemed to be captivated.

After Hawk had left the room. Elizabeth stared at the box. She stared and stared, until her eyes hurt. What was the meaning of this? Why now? When she could not come up with answers for her questions. She lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling.

She decided that, maybe, her questions were best not answered. She decided the Captain must have had a good purpose for giving her such an outfit. She decided to put it on.

Now, standing in the tavern, with people cheering and smiling and drinking, she never felt more exposed. It was not the way she imagined to feel, for her embarrassment was quickly snuffed like a flame, and replaced with excitement, anticipation, and confidence.

At the bar, Ban appeared bewildered. After taking everything in, he shrugged and turned back to whatever dish he was preparing. Diane's face appeared in one of the windows, and she stared in shock. "Elizabeth?" she asked. "What are you wearing?"

Elizabeth smiled. "It's..something the captain gave me."

At this, Diane frowned and moved away, so Elizabeth could no longer see her. Maybe she should not have told Diane whom the gift was from.

Feeling determined, Elizabeth put her hands on her hips. It was time to wait tables.

...

The night went by in a flurry. Customers complimented Elizabeth on what she was wearing; so much so that after waiting a few tables she had gained a stupendous amount of tips. Her arms hurt from balancing drinks and platters of meat on her hands, but the excited buzz surrounding her was enough to motivate her to keep going, even as the number of people dwindled.

Elizabeth noticed how the bar patrons stared at her in awe, how they admired her body. It was unusual for her, she was not used to getting such direct attention, except from Meliodas. And, she noted, even he had seemed more distant as of late.

When the last drunken man slipped out of the bar, Elizabeth sighed. She was surprised at how late it had already gotten, but she also ached with the feeling of longing for Meliodas. She chastised herself for it. It's only been a few hours, She thought to herself.

Just as she was about to head up the stairs, the tavern opened, and Meliodas stepped in. His face was as carefree as usual, and small grin taking its place on his lips.

His eyes scanned the bar, noticing the piles of dirty dishes on the table, the smell of meat and alcohol. "Man," he said, "Must have been a busy--"

His eyes stopped on Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's hair rose on her arms, on her neck. The way he was looking at her now made her feel like she was stripped naked, like she and Meliodas were the only two in the room. She turned to face him, showing more of herself to him. He took in her body, the fullness of her breasts, the way her waist dipped , the sheen of sweat that covered her from waiting all night. "Elizabeth," he said.

Before he could continue, Elizabeth turned and rushed up the stars, her body going hot, so hot under his stare, that she needed to get away. She needed to stop thinking about the way his eyes scanned her from head to toe, about the way her eyes went to his lips, the lips she could not stop thinking about ever since she met the Captain.

She turned the bend and went straight into her room, closing the door behind her. She went to the far end of the room, and stared out of the window. It looked like everyone--Ban, Diane, King, Hawk, and Merlin-- was sitting on the porch, admiring the stars.

It looked like her and Captain were alone in the house.
