The Boar's head was silent.
Everyone, incuding Hawk, who usually pranced around the perimeter looking for scraps, was lazily lounging in the kitchen or in their designated rooms. The sweltering head was brash, making wandering travelers and animals alike scurry to whatever available shade there was.
Elizabeth sat in her room, staring out of the window. She fiddled with a strand of her silvery-blue hair, not once taking her eyes off of the grassy horizon that seemed to stretch on for miles. The Seven Deadly Sins hadn't had much action recently, and were wandering the many terrains of Britannia looking for leads on the next Sin. They had come across nothing however, and Elizabeth could tell the group was getting discouraged. Paired with the unforgivable heat, the past few days had been slow and depressing.
Elizabeth couldn't help but feel useless because she had done nothing to help. She had hoped to cheer the Sins up, by making them small trinkets and checking in, but she felt like she should've stayed at the castle. She sighed as tears pooled in her eyes. I'm just getting in the way.
As if the Gods were listening to her, someone knocked on the door. "Come in," Elizabeth said, still looking out of the window.
A pair of boots shuffled in, accompanied by the wooden door clicking shut.
"Hey Elizabeth!" Meliodas said as he walked in. Elizabeth jumped, not expecting him to show up. Her heart fluttered as she turned around to face him, and smiled. "Sir Meliodas! Is there a problem?"
He shook his head and grinned. "Just checking in. There's a small town a few miles from here, we should be stopping in a bit."
Elizabeth sighed with relief. They had been travelling for the past few days and she hadn't set foot on solid ground in a while.
Meliodas seemed to notice the somber tone in her voice, and walked over to sit next to her on her bed. The bed shiften under his weight, the slight motion making Elizabeth's heart beat faster. She tried to stop fidgeting with her hair, but after a few moments of awkwardness, she grabbed another section.
"Hey," Meliodas said, following her gaze out of the small window. "Is everything alright?"
Elizabeth stopped twirling her hair and turned to him. She expected to find the bright green of liquified amusement in his eyes, but she could only detect the soft green of concern. She sighed once more and turned away. She wasnt expecting that question.
"I...I don't think so." She said finally. "I.. feel like I'm useless around here. Everything I do, I just feel like I'm getting in your way." She took a deep breath. "I know I'm probably overreacting, but I just have a sense I'm a burden." To this Meliodas inclined his head towards her. He didnt say anything, but she felt his gaze turn on her. All of a sudden, her clothes became too tight, the bed too small, her skirt too short. She noticed the closeness of their hands, and how his knuckles brushed hers when he shifted position. She became hyper aware, and a small blush crept into her cheeks. But she continued. "I have to apologize for my lack of help, its just... I really hoped that after what happened with Hendrickson, I would be more confident in myself." She fiddled with a button. "But I find myself comparing myself to you all, and I feel inferior." She slumped her shoulders as a small tear fell. She didn't make the effort to wipe it away.
More tears came, and soon they were streaming down her cheek. She didnt know when, but at some point Meliodas had wrapped his arm around her shoulders. She appreciated the touch.
"Y'know, Elizabeth," Meliodas finally said. "I wish you saw yourself the way everyone else did." Elizabeth turned towards him, her face now streaked with salty tears. "You're our motivation. You may not think you do much around here, but you keep everyone in good spirits." He reached up and wiped a tear away from her face. "I made a promise to always protect you, to be by your side. That's what's keeping me going."
His face had come close to hers. She could smell the faint scent of Ale on him, and sweat. She inhaled deeply, looking into his emerald eyes. His breath caressed her lips, making her stomach flip flop. Is he going to kiss me? She thought. The image of his lips on hers, her chest pressed to him as they held each other, fogged her mind. She knew she shouldn't think of such things, but once the images showed up, she couldn't erase them.
Meliodas leaned back, smiling lopsidedly like he always did. The familiar expression warmed her heart. Elizabeth smiled at him.
Before he had a chance to say anything else, Elizabeth grabbed him and pulled him against her bosom in a deep embrace. "Thank you, Sir Meliodas."
Outside, Hawk's mom came to a stop. Elizabeth released Meliodas from in between her breasts, immediatly missing the warmth of his head nestled so close against her. Meliodas got up from the bed, and looked out of the windows.
He smiled widely. "We're here."
