James couldn't believe what he was hearing. And he definitely wasn't afraid of Pete. He'd been through enough at this point and he knew he could handle a big angry man baby. Nonetheless, Morgan's safety and general contentedness was something he cared for so he decided to make things easy on the girl and get her out of the hospital.
"Okay, let's get your stuff together."
Morgan immediately scrambled up and out of her bed, James watched as she made a mad grab for the tubes connected to her innards.
"Hey, hey!" He stopped her before she could violently rip them out, as he knew she was about to hurt herself.
He helped her take them out with unmatched tenderness and care.
"Let's get out of here." He smiled softly at her as he offered her his hand. She grabbed for it excitedly as she pulled herself up. The two gathered her belongings quickly, and before they left James tenderly wrapped his jacket around her.
Before they left the room Morgan briefly paused at the door to soak in the energy of the room. Something about the atmosphere James had created made it feel so safe, despite everything that was going on around them. She took one last look at the room before her eyes met James. The emotion he held in them was so gentle and caring, she couldn't wait to run away with him.
"Let's go." He said to her, and the two made their way towards the exit. It wasn't long before someone made an attempt to put a hitch in their plans.
"Hey you two! You can't leave yet!" The nurse that had been helping morgan yelled after them. Sometimes it really felt like the whole world was out to get them.
"James what do we do?" Morgan was unsure of the best course of action was. They didn't know what they'd need to be able to leave the hospital, and it could be too late for the two of them to make their escape from Pete by the time the hospital had finished with them. While James wasn't afraid of Pete, he certainly didn't want to be around the guy anymore than he had to. Not to mention, Morgan certainly didn't need any extra stress.
James made his decision without a second thought, looked Morgan dead in the eyes and told her "run." She didn't hesitate to heed his words. She booked it towards the exit while James ran behind her to ensure het safety. Morgan glanced over her shoulder only to see 3 security guards and 2 orderlies running about 200 feet behind them.
"Stop!" The hospital staff yelled after them, "you can't leave yet! You're wanted for questioning." That struck fear into Morgan's entire being. What could they possibly have done to be wanted for questioning? It didn't matter anyways, they weren't sticking around to find out.
They made it to the door and Morgan stole one more glance and saw that the orderlies and security guards and gained about 100 feet on them in the time it took them to make it to the door. James grabbed a nearby trash can and threw it in front of the small exit door, it's contents spilling everywhere. He didn't know how effective it'd be, but it was better than doing nothing.
They burst out the front doors and James held out his hand for Morgan, so as to guide her to the car. She held his outstretched hand and did her best to keep up when he took off for the car. Once they made it to the car James fumbled for the keys. Where they in his front shirt pocket? No- maybe his back pocket? No again.
The orderlies made their way out the front door and Morgan watched as they swiveled their heads around wildly, searching for the two escapees. Morgan's heart skipped a beat when her eyes locked with one of the orderlies.
"They're over there!" He shouted, as James was still looking for the keys. Morgan could feel her hearts pace quicken as they approached.
"Uh, James? Any day now!" She yelled from her passenger door.
"I can't find the keys!" He shouted in a panic.
Morgan watched helplessly as the orderlies continued to close in on them.
"James, run!" And with that they took off again, just narrowly avoiding the orderlies. They sprinted together as fast as they could to escape the hospital, so as to start their journey to escaping Pete.
They ran through the city that surrounded the hospital, passing quant little shops and restaurants that were nothing but a blur to them as they ran for their safety.
They ran through a park and into a connecting forest, dodging leaves and weaving through branches.
They continued on until they couldn't run anymore, and they could no longer ignore the burning in their chests that only grew with the distance between the two of them and the hospital.
The orderlies had fallen behind ages ago, but they wanted to run until they had felt it was safe to take a break. It was better safe than sorry after everything they'd been through... and were going to go through. All in an attempt to feel safe once again, at peace if you will.
Morgan hadn't known peace since she'd started dating Pete, and she was hoping that she could find it again with James.
The two had stopped in a clearing they'd found in the forest. Both of them bent over with their hands on their knees as they tried to catch their breath, making brief eye contact as they did so.
It wasn't until both of their breathing had slowed that Morgan realized that the left pocket of the jacket James had given her was heavier than the right one.
Out of curiosity she reached her hand into the heavy pocket, only to feel the cool metal of what must have been James' car keys.
She carefully pulled them out and held them up so James could see them.
"Right, figures." He said.
