Kai let out the breath he had been holding, releasing with it the stench of death and fruit. As Cole leaned against the passenger side window of the old 2003 Toyota Camry, the irony of the situation sunk in. Death smells so sweet as you take another puff to forget.

Pulling into the carpark, kai finally spoke.
"I just want the best for her, you know?"

Nya meant the world to Kai. She was his kid sister and the only relative he was legally allowed to be in touch with. That being said, he tended to be wildly overprotective. She was 16 now and able to make decisions for herself. Cole would never tell him that. He knew Kai's heart was in the right place, but spying on Nya's date seemed a little excessive.

The coffee shop was quaint and homey. The smell of freshly pressed beans filled the air with an earthy scent that reminded cole of his home in Honduras.

Kai picked a table far away from the door, tucked into the back corner. Setting his phone on the table so cole could see the screen, he opened Instagram and clicked on the groupchat with Lloyd and Morro.

"Lloyd knows the guy Nya's coming here with," he explained as he clicked on the message Lloyd had sent.

@jay._.walker followed by golden.lloyd, ghostboy, nyakhalifa and 6 others

"While we wait I thought we could learn as much as we can about this 'Jay' guy," Kai said, sifting through the posts.

His 100k following and 'Public Figure' account was proof enough of his influencer statice. His shoulder-length, curly, dark blond hair had an impossibly perfect shine to it. Most of the pictures seemed to display his current makeup and rants about video games. Though he didn't have the typical gamer look, his featured story titled 'gaming lmao' was filled with clips and discussions about current video games and drama in the Twitch community.

"Wow, he actually seems kind of cool. I don't trust how much highlighter he uses, though. A little sus," Kai was nitpicking, but Cole suspected he didn't really mean it.

The bell above the door alerted them to the newcomers. The two of them took a seat at the raised table by the front of the shop and began whispering amongst themselves.

The girl sat closest to the door, her black Fjällräven Kånken slung over the back of her chair.

Her companion looked nothing like the images. This boy was tall and lean, with neatly cut blond curls. His pale clear skin was starkly different from the honey freckled face in the posts. From across the table, Kai groaned.

"It's not him," Kai said, "we've been duped."

"I don't recognize him. Who is he?" Cole asked in a whisper, leaning closer to Kai but never looking away from the boy.

"That's Zane. He's, like, Nya's best friend. But why is he here?" Kai questioned, scarred face twisted in confusion.

The question hung between the two, even as Cole stood up to order drinks.

Across the shop, Zane rose from his seat and made his way to the counter. Loitering off to the side, Cole could see Zane up close. His clothes were crisp and monochrome; black turtleneck tucked into high waisted black pants.

"One caramel latte, please," he said, voice soft but assertive.

As the barista began mixing the drinks, Zane came to stand near Cole.

"Hey," Cole raised his hand in greeting, sounding as nonchalant as possible.

The side-eye Zane gave him in response led into a nod. He pulled out his phone and opened Instagram.

The awkward silence around them was interrupted by the young man who had taken their orders announcing Cole and Kai's drinks. Grabbing the tray with both hands, he made eye contact with Zane on his way back to Kai. One of Zane's eyebrows quirked up at the sight of Kai, but the contact was broken when his latte was ready
