After the two best friends finished washing dishes with a mopey, unenthusiastic Jet, they left the dining hall and went to their respective cabins. It was late by this time, after curfew. There had been a lot of dishes to be washed. And of course they'd run out of soap halfway.

When Sokka slipped into his cabin he saw Zuko sitting on the floor with his back to the wall; he was reading a book in the light of a little lamp on the bedside table. And this book was serious stuff, 600 pages at least. "Hey," Sokka said, sitting down across from Zuko, "What are you reading?" Zuko started a little, "What? Oh, Sokka, hi."

"Not happy to see me?" Sokka grinned and attempted to read some of the words on the page upside down, "And with that, the Dark Water Spirit banished the- Oh I give up, I can't read upside down..." He looked up and found they were nose to nose, with the book in between them.

Why? Why did Sokka always get this fluttery feeling in his chest whenever he saw the gold of Zuko's eyes? They'd been sharing a cabin for a week already. So why was this happening now? Something had happened this morning. Something magic had almost happened. But then Jet had broken the spell.

Zuko was frozen. With his back against the wall and Sokka right there in front of him, he couldn't really move. But he gently closed the book and set it to the side, revealing the cover, Love Amongst the Dragons.

Now there was nothing between them.

Sokka leaned forward and slowly touched his lips to Zuko's, giving the other boy time to resist or pull away.

He didn't.
