chapter 30 - what

After the wedding Steve and Lennox didn't want a usual honeymoon, they didn't want to be away from everyone for to long so they went to the beach for one night, the drive wasn't to bad for Steve at least because Lennox drove the two hour distance. The night was pretty fun and relaxing, they stayed on the beach for most of the night. After the sun set Lennox told Steve she was not getting in the water because of sharks, so Steve made a picnic for them to eat on the shore. After they sat there for a while taking in the breathtaking sights, the couple retired into the beach house they rented for tonight and tomorrow.

The next morning Lennox woke up super early so the couple could go to the beach, Lennox was already in her light blue bikini, her hair was in a messy bun and sunscreen was on before she woke up Steve.

They walked off the back porch onto the beach, the sand was scolding Steve's feet but it didn't cause any harm to Lennox's skin.

"We should bring Nat and Amara to the beach next time we come, my best memories are from being on a beach." Lennox sighed thinking about the nostalgic memories that bring a childish grin to her face.

"I've never been to the beach well once Bucky and i went but he got stung by a jellyfish and we left to take him to the doctor because he wasn't to fond of the idea that we needed to pee on his leg." Steve chuckled, Lennox stifled a laugh as she dropped the beach bags and pulled Steve towards the ocean.

"People always say that marriage is the end of the road, i say that this is just our beginning." Lennox commented to Steve, he gave her remark some thought and agreed with her. "Is it just me or is your gut telling you something isn't right?"

"I think it's just yours, my love why whats up?"

"Nothing, forget about it. Nat and Amara are meeting up with us for dinner at the diner." Lennox informed Steve.

"Right, then we should leave here around 2."

The drive home Steve and Lennox were happy, but something in Lennox's stomach was pulling her towards overthinking. Something horrible was about to occur and she could feel it in her gut.

Amara and Natasha were waiting at the diner for their friends to get back. They were eating french fries while they sat there, at the diner there had to have been only four other people.

"So i was thinking, we should host a party for your birthday coming up, what do you say?" Amara asked, Nat shook her head. "Oh, come on. Parties are fun plus i don't know what to get you and a party is a great present."

"Mara, i don't need a party or a gift from you. I just need you to be there with me, also we all know we don't have to throw a party for everyone to show up anyway." Natasha grabbed her wife's hand, she smiled at the beautiful doctor that she has fallen in love with.

Amara sighed in defeat, "You're right, next year? Nat give me something, what do you want for your birthday anything like oh, uhm that record player we saw in the store coming here?" She raised her eyebrow at the smiling red head, "You're smiling hah! That's a yes, wait now i just told you what i'm getting you that's not fair."

Steve and Lennox walked into the diner, Amara waved the two over and Lennox sat next to Amara and Steve sat on the other side next to Natasha at the big booth next to the window.

"How was the trip?" Amara questioned the newly weds.

"It was great, how was being alone with out the two most interesting and funny people you know?" Lennox teased Amara and Natasha.

"Haha, we all know i'm the most interesting and funny." Natasha sarcastically replied to Lennox's quick wit.

They all ordered their meals, well out of the three things on the menu. Lennox and Nat got chicken tenders while Steve and Amara got cheeseburgers, all four of them ordered a milkshake and they sat their laughing, not realizing their fate for the end of the day.

"I think we should get a dog, not like Steve and I but like a team dog. Like an Australian shepherd, they are so cute and we can name him commander. Because Cap, Captain and then sergeant Barnes, and commander would you know fit in." Lennox explained getting an amused smile from Natasha and Amara while Cap wasn't really feeling it.

"I think it's a really good idea we could use some cheerfulness around us, you are all so gloomy." Amara teased, then the glass shattered and Amara gasped placing her hand on her chest.

"Mar!" Natasha yelled, Steve got up running after the guy who was standing across the street. Lennox was holding Amara up as she was fighting consciousness. "Hey, hey stay with me we will get you help okay." Natasha helped Lennox move Amara to the ground so they could help her. There it was the bullet wound right next to her heart.

"No." Amara breathed out shaking her head as much as she could, everyone had cleared out of the Diner after the gunshot. "I'm a surgeon, i know i can't survive this." She placed her hand on Nats cheek. "You'll be okay."

"No, i won't. Amara Jane, you need to stay with me, i need you and Lennox needs you. I can't lose you Amara." Natasha frantically said with tears spilling down her cheeks, while Lennox held pressure on the wound trying to hold in all the tears which was not working.

"Nat, Lenna, you two have each other. And a- and Sam, Steve, Wanda so many more." Amara whispered out trying to save her breathe. "It's okay to hurt, but don't let it consume you because you are so much stronger than that. Oh god, there's so much i want to say." Tears slipped down the side of Amara's face. "Nat, you are the love of my life, but your allowed to move on. Just know i'll be waiting for you in heaven, b-but don't dont visit me to soon, everyone needs you because you are so amazing i'm glad i get to die in your arms you know that." Amara's voice cracked as she looked at her sobbing wife.

"You're not dying today Amara, ambulance is coming we just need you to hold on." Lennox gave an optimistic smile, one that she knows Amara would have used if the roles were switched.

"Lennox, i'm so happy i was your maid of honor, you deserve happiness with Steve. Get that dog or a frog, i don't remember." Amara let out a raspy laugh from her croaking voice. Her eyes started to roll back.

"Hey, don't you leave me right now." Natasha commanded, putting two fingers to feel Amara's pulse.

"Hey, give me a kiss." Amara opened her eyes looking up at Natasha, Nat bent down and placed a soft kiss on her wife's lips. "I'll return it when we meet again."
