"YOU TOLD HIM! YOU TOLD HIM WHEN I SPECIFICALLY SAID NOT TO SAY A WORD!" Mother screamed at me.
She held my wrist tight as I squirmed for freedom. I didn't look at her out of fear. I was terrified. Tears streamed down my face as the tips of my fingers began to go numb.
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! Mommy I swear! Please! Im sorry!" I cried.
She threw me to the ground and pointed her wand straight at me. I looked up at her, terrified of what will happen next. Father stood behind her, he two looked exceedingly angry.
"You disrespectful, ungrateful brat!" Mother screamed.
Amethyst ran to put herself in front of me, creating a barrier between me and mother.
"Get out of the way you brat!" Mother growled, now aiming her wand at Amethyst's chest.
"No! I won't let you touch her! She did nothing but tell the truth!"
"I told her not to say anything!"
"What do you expect?! A twelve year old to shut up and keep quiet about abuse?! You leave her alone!"
Mother stiffened, and a smirk grew onto her face. Amethyst looked back at me, and nodded her head slightly, signalling me to leave. I got up and ran up the stairs towards my room, and just before i shut my door, i could hear the loud screams of my sister, and the evil cackle of my mother. I ran and hid in my closet locking the door behind me, and hid in a corner. I hugged my knees close to my chest, and buried my face in my knees. I began to cry and cry, the screams from my sister still ringing in the background. Then it all faded to black.
...
I bolted upward, my blankets falling off of me. I looked around my lonely dorm room, and crossed my legs. I knew I couldn't go back to sleep, not after that. It had been less than a year since that fateful christmas. I didn't know what to do. Hitting and cursing us at every chance they got seemed to be mother and father's favorite pastime. I got up, and threw my cloak over my shoulders. Tonight, I wore a tank top and shorts, saying as it was still summer. I looked at my clock, and read the time. 12:33, I thought to myself. I sighed and snuck out of my dormitory. I wanted to be away. I snuck out of my common room and out towards the entrance hall, which they usually left open at night, especially in the summer.
I walked out of the castle and towards the great lake. To my surprise, I saw another figure sitting there, admiring it's still waters. I approached the person, mainly because they looked like a student. Their shadow projected onto the ground. As I got closer to the person, I was able to make out more of their features. Their short messy hair, and baggy clothes. But when I get closer to the person, I recognize the person. I sat down next to her, and rested my head on her shoulder. We sat there. Silent.
"Hey mary." She finally said, breaking the silence.
"Hey Aj..."
"You alright?"
"No... I had that dream... again..."
Amethyst rubbed my arm, trying to comfort me. The start of my third year hadn't been the best. Draco and Pansy had started dating last minute in our second year, and he is head over heels in love with her. I had this burning feeling of jealousy whenever I saw them together. I wished it was me, not her. Pansy would rub it in people's faces, sucking his face off whenever she got the chance. Amethyst and I relied on each other for support. Even if we didn't talk while we were together, we may have been closer than ever.
"Im sorry... It's all my fault. This is all my fault..." Amethyst said, still looking out at the waters.
I looked up at her, shocked.
"That's not very nice on yourself." I said, nudging her arm.
"But it's true... This all started because I got into an argument with Mother. None of this would be happening if i had just smiled and nodded." She said, sounding completely serious.
"Don't put that on yourself. I promise we will get through this. Even if we're far apart, we still have ways to contact each other." I said.
"Yeah. I guess..." Amethyst sighed.
We sat in silence once again. The only noise was the soft breeze and the water crashing against the land.
"So, got anyone special in your life?" Amethyst said, a slight smirk on her face.
"Sort of... not really." I replied sheepishly.
"Really? Who? I need details here. I'm your sister after all." She stated, moving so she and I were able to face each other.
"Well... It's complicated. He is basically my only friend-"
"Already assuming it's not either of the twins."
"And he's dating someone-"
"Confirmed, not one of the twins."
"And i hate the person he's dating so-"
Amethyst gasped, looking at me with a cocky smile.
"You like Draco!"
My face flooded red.
"How?!"
"Well, for one, your face just proves my theory. Secondly, you don't hate that many people. The twins are your friends, and you said that they are dating someone, so that checks them off the list. You hang out with Draco a lot, and seem jealous whenever he is with Parkinson, and she seems to be the only person you have a pure hatred towards." She said, smiling at me.
"I will never understand how that brain of yours works. But yes, it is Draco." I said smiling at her.
"I knew it." Amethyst chuckled, and gave a small bow.
"What about you? Got anybody special?" I asked, giving off a small smirk.
Amethyst flushed with red in the face, and looked at me wide eyed.
"So there is!" I squealed, pointing at her. "Who is it? Please tell me! I bet it is that Martelene girl!"
Martelene Howlway was a girl in Hufflepuff with long dirty brown hair, which alway's fell past her shoulders. She had round yellow eyes, and a love for rabbits. Amethyst admired her, I could tell. She stared at me, her entire face red at this point, but she shook it off and smirked at me.
"You are really smart, you know that right? You would have done well in ravenclaw." She said, imitating the sorting hat.
I laughed as she made a goofy face to look like she was thinking.
"Please! Me? In ravenclaw! You must be mental. I don't want to have to answer a riddle just to go to bed. Getting into pajamas is enough work as it is." I scoffed and Aj giggled.
The two of us laid down on the grass, looking at the stars. Tonight was definitely one of my favorites, mainly because it helped me get my mind off of other things. I wanted to stay like this. Happy. But i knew it wouldn't stay like that. Soon enough we would have to go home for christmas, and the whole cycle would start again.
...
"Draco, you are the biggest drama queen in the world." I scoffed as he rubbed his bandaged arm.
We were on our way to potions. I held my books close to my chest.
"I swear! The bloody chicken could have ripped my arm off!" He said walking backwards so he could see my face.
"Yes, but it didn't. But you didn't have to go as far as cancelling quidditch for the rest of the slytherin team. I actually enjoy the sport as well."
His white-blond hair flowed perfectly into his face. He had grown over the summer. Making him much taller than me.
"Well, Mary Jane, I'm sorry, did I upset you?" He said in a sarcastic tone.
I scoffed as we turned the corner, only to be acquainted by none other than parkinson.
"Heyyyy drayyy." She cooed in his ear, clutching his arm.
"Hey flower, anyway-"
"Flower?" I asked, looking at him, quite surprised.
"Yeah. A pansy is a type of flower. I thought it was cute." Dray said, his arm around her waist.
I looked down at the ground. We waited outside the potions classroom for snape. I tuned out all conversation with Draco, saying as he was more flirting with Parkinson than talking to me. That jealous feeling burned like a match inside of me.
I imagined socking her in the face. I knew it would happen some day. I just didn't know when.
"Are you okay? Mary?" Draco said, snapping me back to reality.
"What-"
"You just suddenly got this evil look on your face. It was scary." Dray said, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I felt sparks run down my arm, but I brushed his hand off.
"I'm fine, thanks." I said, raising my head.
I walked away from him and Parkinson, leaving her with a look of hatred, and him a look of pure confusion.
...
Amethyst and I sat by the great lake, studying. It was a Saturday, people were at the quidditch pitch, and it was a match between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Amethyst only went when the slytherins were playing, so she could cheer for me and draco. And we hadn't had a match since draco was scratched by that hippogryph. Draco was in the hospital wing, because of a charm Harry set on him after he dressed like a dementor. Amethyst and I sat studying and talking about different quills, and the latest news on Sirius Black.
"I'm telling you! There is something odd about his case. I mean, why would he go for an explosion charm?" Amethyst said, looking up from her parchment.
"Maybe he didn't want to leave behind any evidence? I don't know."
"But he was surrounded by muggles! He can't have been that viscous."
"Amethyst, look at his family line! He's a black! You know, some of the most loyal death eaters known to wizarding kind! I mean, his cousin is Bellatirx Lestrange! She is the one responsible for what happened to the Longbottom's!"
"That doesn't mean anything! He could be very different from them!"
"I guess you have a point..." I said, looking at the edge of the forest.
I could have sworn I saw something move, but shook it off, knowing it was probably just my head messing with me. I craned my neck to look behind my sister, only to see HArry, Ron and Hermione coming towards us.
Hermione tugged on their sleeves, mumbling things into their ears. I raised an eyebrow, and Amethyst turned around, looking at the three of them.
"Please! Guy's c'mon! Let her be!" Hermione cried, pulling on Ron's sleeve.
"What do you want." I snapped.
"Hey Mary, Amethyst." Harry said, stopping in front of us.
He rubbed the back of his head. Amethyst glared at him. Neither she nor I got along with Harry or Ron. We got along with Hermione just fine, she was the smarter one out of the three of them.
"Are you going to stand there all day, or are you going to talk?" Amethyst snapped, collecting her things and getting to her feet.
I grabbed my things and stood, standing close to my sister.
"Well, I wanted to ask if you wanted to be friends. Specifically you, Mary." He smiled, and Ron looked between the three of us.
Hermione was staring at her feet, holding her books close to her chest.
"Excuse me?" I said straightening my back.
"Yeah. I don't understand why you would want to be friends with Malfoy." Hurry said, stuffing his hand in his pockets.
"What?!"
"I mean, he is a git."
Thwack. The back of my hand met his cheek, and he stumbled backward. Ron caught him, and they all looked up at me, completely shocked. Hermione covered her mouth with her hand, half laughing at harry.
"You NEVER say that about my best friend in front of me. And he might not be a git to you if you had just given him a chance! I have known him since I was a baby! And he is the best friend i have ever had!" I barked at him. "And you really think I would want to be friends after what you have done to him?! After what you put him through! You must be sick!"
Harry glared at me, and walked off, Ron trailing behind him as walked off.
"I'm so very sorry. I tried to stop them, I really did. But Ron and I are in a bit of a disagreement at the moment, and he isn't listening to me." She sighed.
I gave her an apologetic smile and patted her on the shoulder.
"I'm sorry. You're always welcome to come hang around with us whenever." She smiled, and we said our goodbye's, and she walked off, joining Ron and harry.
