(This chapter is a bit boring. Sorry .-.)
The past week was the most stressful of my life. With Mary in the hospital wing, Potter stalking me every waking moment of the day, apparition lessons, and the task I had been given at the beginning of the year (Snape won’t leave me be about trying to help me with it). I had just left the Room of Requirement, giving up on fixing that vanishing cabinet. I had been rather lonely, and wanted to go visit Mary. I had been visiting her frequently, giving up on my studies to spend my hours with her. I loved her more than words could describe. She was my everything, and she was hurt. This stung worse than a hornets sting. She was the one person I couldn’t lose. The one that made life so much easier. She was the one that amazed me every time.
“Hey Draco.” A familiar voice hummed.
I cringed, not wanting to be around her. She skipped by my side, her shoulder-length black hair was pulled back into a bun, which was held together with her wand.
“What do you want, Parkinson?” I whispered sorrowly.
“Awe.” She pouted her lip, “What’s bothering you?”
“I don’t want to go into it. Please leave me alone.” I sniffled.
“Why? I want to hang around! What’s bothering you? You can trust me.”
“Your actions have told me otherwise.”
She huffed, and began to pick at her nails.
“Draco, i’m just trying to make amends. Please talk to me!”
“Thanks, but no thanks. I’m good.” I smiled at her slightly, trying to shoo her off.
She stopped, but I continued to walk, thinking she was finally leaving me alone.
“It’s about Mary, isn’t it?” She said, venom laced in her words.
I stopped. What did she want? What did she want to know?”
“I don't see why that is any of your business.” I snapped around to look at her.
“But it is. I can feel it in your aura. I know your pain when I see it. Why would you be so upset over her? What happened?”
“It doesn’t matter…” I snapped at her.
“Please, tell me! If you can’t tell me, then let's go walk by the lake. Just the two of us.” She smirked and winked at me.
“No, I can’t trust you. And I don’t want to be over there. Not after what happened.”
“OH! It has something to do with the lake!”
I shot her a dirty look. She crossed her arms, cocking her hip to her side. I turned back around and continued walking, trying to get away from her.
“Draco, let’s not worry about Mary.” I stopped, planting my feet. “She isn’t important.”
I snapped around, half-running-half-walking towards her.
“She nearly drowned you daft dimbo!” I pushed her slightly, and she looked up at me.
“Don't put your grubby hands on me you filthy death eater!” She snapped.
“Listen here you little-”
“Mr. Malfoy,” I heard a calm voice announce. “I would like to remind you that we have no tolerance for explicits.” McGongle raised her brows, standing up straight.
“My dearest apologies, Professor.” I mumbled.
Pansy cackled under her breath. McGonagle shot her a nasty look, shutting her up real quick.
“That is not, however, the reason I came to collect you. You are needed in the hospital wing.”
I looked at the woman, my head turned to the side a bit. She gave me a warm smile and my heart fluttered. McGonagle and I turned to walk, but McGonagle stopped to say something first.
“Parkinson, why don’t you report to detention later, yes?” She smiled at her, turning back around and continued to walk. I snickered silently, but continued to walk.
"Has she really-?”
McGonagle simply nodded her head, and I felt excitement rush over me. I nearly tripped, stumbling over my laces. McGonagle let a small chuckle.***
I slammed the hospital wing doors open. Surrounding a bed in the far corner were Snape (who was lecturing the person in the bed, obviously), Dumbledore, and Madame Pomfrey. I rushed towards the bed. Mary sat upwards in the bed, listening to Snape’s lecture her head cocked to the side and her lips pressed together in a thin line. Her eyes wandered around the ceiling, avoiding eye contact with Snape.
“Please leave me be… My head hurts, and this ruckus isn’t helping.”
“Watch your tone with me young lady.” Snape inched toward her.
“Severus, please.” Dumble placed a hand on the man's shoulder, and he backed off.
“Mary!” I called, almost reaching her bed.
She turned her head slowly, a large grime growing on her face. It warmed my heart.
“Draco!” She opened her arms, her smile only growing greater as I raced toward her.
I wrapped my arms around her. My hand laced its fingers through her messy and knotted hair.
“I missed you desperately.” I whispered in her ear.
“I’m sorry. I’m done with quidditch. I quit the team.” She admitted.
I broke away from Mary, clutching her hand tightly. I smiled at her, but before I could say anything else, I noticed a bandage wrap around her left arm. I looked up from her arm and back up into her eyes. She gave me an awkward smile, but nodded her head to side, motioning that it was no big deal.
“Now,” Dumbledore cleared his throat, “We will leave you two alone. Get some time to catch up with events.” Dumbledore winked, “Let us leave, Severus.”
They left without another word, the headmaster looking back at us as the two left, but said nothing.
“So, they know now?” I asked, pulling up a stool to sit down at.
“I presume so... But let’s not worry about that now.” She smiled. “What’s been happening at hogwarts? What’s new?”
“Well, I’ve been doing my fair share of snooping and repairing.” I looked at her, hoping she understood.
“You needn’t to go into detail.” She sipped her pumpkin juice, which had been located on her bedside table.
“I’ve found potter seems to be stalking me. Keeps waiting outside the room of requirement.” Mary shook her head at this, “Got into a bit of an argument with Parkinson today.”
“Really?! About what?”She looked away from her juice, and up at me, her eyes wide.
“It’s nothing to worry about. Let us say that it resulted in her getting detention.” I smiled.
Mary laughed, taking another bite of the bread Madame Pomfrey had given her.
“But enough about me, what about you? How have you been?” I smiled at her.
“Everything’s such a blur… After I left the quidditch pitch, I only remember it being really cold and dark… I remember not being able to breath.” She explained. “After that, it’s all so blurry… I woke up here, barely able to breathe… I had this horrible migraine, but Madame Pomfrey fixed me up. And here I am!”
“What got you so worked up in the first place? You seemed really upset or angry.” I asked.
Mary sighed and looked back at me, letting go of my hand to reach for her pumpkin juice.
“It’s quite embarrassing, actually. I had gotten a letter earlier that day. It asked a question with very little context with it.” She bowed her head, “It doesn’t matter though.”
“Who was it from?” I asked her.
“Amethyst… She sent a letter, doesn’t matter what she asked, and I was irritated. I wished she had elaborated more. The way she thinks drives me mad sometimes,” She joked, chuckling slightly.
I felt my breath catch in my throat. She looked back up at me, and scrunched up her brows. A puzzled look in her eyes.
“Dragon, is everything alright?” Mary placed a gentle hand on my cheek.
“Everything is fine.” I lied, sending her a reassuring smile.
She obviously didn't believe me, and again, pressed her lips into a thin line.
“Liar.” She hummed, taking a bite of bread.
“No, I am not a liar.” I said, trying to avoid the subject.
“Then tell me why you have the face on!” Mary mumbled, her mouth full of bread.
“I do not have the face!”
“Yes you do!”
According to Mary, whenever I had told a lie, I had an awkward expression that she had found quite humorous whenever she pointed it out. I, for one, did not believe it. We stared at each other for a moment until she raised her eyebrows and I gave in.
“Amethyst came to visit you after you were saved from the lake…” I sighed.
She gasped, excitement filling her still tired looking eyes.
“Really? Is she still here? Can I see her?” Mary looked behind me eagerly looking at the door.
I only looked at my feet, fiddling with my fingers.
“No, she left after about 30 minutes or so.” I admitted.
“Oh.” Disappointment in her voice, “Why did she leave so soon?”
“It doesn't matter.” I sighed, still looking at the floor.
“Draco, look at me.”
I obeyed, and looked up into her soft sapphire eyes. Her face was gentle, and kind. She looked like she would understand, but I didn’t want to get into it. I sighed, trying not to seem obvious. I finally gave in, and told her everything. I explained to her what I had said, and how I got to the point. Her face bore no expression as she stared at me. When I finally finished, I paused, taking a deep breath and looking back at my feet.
“I know, I know, I’m an idiot…” I trailed my words off.
“Draco, it’s fine.” I snapped my head up. I hadn’t expected that response, “However, you really need to let it go. It happened over a year ago. And honestly, it’s not really that big of a deal anymore. I’m still in contact with her. And that, for now, is good enough.” She smiled, leaning forward just enough to kiss my forehead.
She sat back down comfortable, looking out at the sunny fall day through the high windows. She quivered her brow once more and slowly turned her head away from the window. However, she did not take her eyes off of it.
“Hey, do you know the date?” She pondered, still not taking her eyes off the window.
“Umm, the 5th?”
“Of what month?”
“November, why?”
“Oh no reason.”
Her voice trailed off into the distance, turning back to stare out the window. We continued to talk for a few hours, I stayed with her until Madame Pomfrey kicked me out of the wing.
