Return to the Sea (Gale Hawthorne x OC)

Chapter 26

I slowly open my eyes only to see everyone but Katniss asleep. I lift my head from Gale's shoulder and quietly stand up. I start walking towards Katniss when we hear a sound. Our heads snap towards the opening where the sound came from. I walk closer to the passage while Katniss takes out the halo. I walk down the stairs and turn on my flashlight.

Soon, Katniss comes down with her own flashlight. We point it to where we thought the sound came from, then we heard it behind us. I whipped around and saw nothing. Katniss turned toward the others when Peeta woke up, startling the others, waking them too. I slowly walk closer to the sound.

"Katniss?" Peeta called.

The noise was heard again, causing me to take a step back. My heart started racing as I thought of all the things it could be.

"What is that?" Jackson asked.

"We gotta go. We gotta get out of here now." Peeta said.

"Keep your voice down." Gale warned.

"Mutts! They released mutts." Peeta yelled.

"Pollux, what's the fastest way out of here?" Katniss questioned.

Everything started to blur together as the memories flooded in.

I ran through many vines and leaves, getting a few cuts on my arms and face. I dodged past trees, trying to loose at least one of my attackers. I thought of different possibilities of how to get rid of the things when I tripped over a giant log.

I quickly flipped over and grabbed my spear, pointing it at the three oncoming mutations. But from my right, I saw a one sided axe fly towards one of the mutts. I turned my head to see District 10's male tribute. I heard a whimper and looked back to the creatures.

One of them had the axe to the head. One looked at the male and started charging towards him. The other was still mourning the death of its sibling. I took this time to get back up and continue running. Suddenly I heard a cannon go off and deep inside I knew it was District 10. I continued running until my lungs started to burn.

I found a tree and started to climb. I heard the creature close behind and started climbing faster. Then I felt something rip into my left calf and started slicing down. I let out a painful scream and dropped the spear. My grip on the tree loosened and that's when I thought this was it. I was going to die.

A tug on my arm brought me out of my trance. I looked at the person to see Finnick.

"Come on." He whispered.

I nodded and walked with him towards the fire I'm half sure Gale caused. I got out a knife and readied it at my side, thumb over the switch just in case. We all walked on edge to this wedge. Pollux went in and signed us to wait. I held my breath as I watched him check the surroundings. The grip on my knife tightened. I released the air I was holding when I saw him return and tell us to come through.

I went through after Peeta, Finnick behind me. Then the only one left was Jackson to come through. She looked at us the turned around right as these green alien things came out, snarling at us. As they all took Jackson out, some started to crawl through the wedge when Katniss took an arrow out and fired it, making them blow up and Katniss fall back.

"Go! Go! Go!" Someone yelled.

I turned around and ran behind Castor, Pollux leading the way. Then suddenly, the mutts cut us off and tackled Castor. I skid to a stop and fell in the water. Finnick quickly picked me up. I threw the knife as a flipped the switch and the mutts blew up again.

"Fall back!"

I looked up before Finnick grabbed my arm and saw Gale look at me.

"Go!" I yelled.

I ran with Finnick at my side, the mutts running behind us, Cressida, and the others. I saw Dele running ahead of us and she turned to her left. I grab Finnick's arm and take him left with me, hoping the others will follow behind. I keep hearing screams from the people behind us. I looked ahead and saw the alien things running at us from there, then Dele took a right.

"Right!" I yelled.

Finnick followed my directions and went right. I could see the others fighting the hideous monsters when one hit my side from the left. It screeched in my face as I took the hand gun from the side of my thigh and shot it in the head. I pushed it off and ran back to where to others were. I saw Peeta getting pulled by one and quickly threw a knife at it. I grabbed another knife and quickly slashed an oncoming mutt.

"Go. Go. Go. Go. Go!" I heard Cressida yell.

I looked behind me to see them all climbing up a ladder. I turned back just in time to see a mutt coming straight towards me. I ran at it and jumped around on its back. It took me awhile to get my balance, losing a knife while doing so. When I got my balance, I took my hands to either side of its head and snapped its neck. I jumped off its back as it fell to the ground. I ran as quickly as I could to the ladder when a monster bit into my right arm.

I yelled in agony as I heard Gale yell my name. I took a knife and stabbed it in to back.

"Ceto!" Finnick called. "Give these to Annie and go!" He through something to which I caught with my left hand and put it in a side pocket.

"Not without you!" I yelled back.

I ran to the ladder and started climbing it, Finnick coming behind me. Gale then grabbed me and pulled me up. I looked down the ladder just in time to see Finnick getting pulled down by the mutts. His screams filling the tunnels.

"Finnick!" I cried out.

"Nightlock. Nightlock. Nightlock." I heard Katniss say before dropping the halo to where Finnick was.

I turned away just as it blew up, stopping Finnick's suffering. A horrid sob escaped me before someone picked me up. I didn't hear what anyone said but I just ran behind them. Then gunshots sounded out. Someone pulled me again and we all started running. But right before my eyes, Messalla turned into dust after a bright light turned on above him.

"Come on!" Gale pulled me again until I could run on my own.

We dodged the light things but soon enough, razors came out of the ground, tearing up the concrete making us run faster. I sprinted next to Cressida as we made it to a safe area.

"Peeta, come on!" Katniss yelled, trying to get Peeta up. "Peeta!"

"I'm a mutt! I can't keep control!"

"Yes, you can!"

"Leave me! I'm a mutt!"

"Look at me! Look at me." Katniss pulled Peeta up to look at her before giving him a kiss. "Stay with me."

"Always."

"Come on."

They all started running. I looked up at the peacekeepers. They all looked back at me. Then a noticed one had something in his hand. It was black with a small red button on it.

Then he pushed it.
