"I'm glad you decided to let me take you out Naomi." I am half way through my lunch, trying to be cordial with Janell.
I put my fork down, "you didn't take me anywhere, you saw me here and asked to pay for my food. I agreed, that does not make this a date."
Her smile didn't falter, "same difference but anyways Lysette told me about the fight."
I proceeded to eat again, sighing heavily. "And what did you learn from her version?"
"How fucked up things got." Janell groans heavily, rubbing her face with her slender fingers roughly. "I just want to end all of it. I'm almost thirty Naomi, I need to grow up."
I chuckled sarcastically, "damn it took me getting hospitalized for you see that?"
"And I regret that as well, I'm owning all of it. I'm sorry." She said seriously.
"No snarky comment?" I raise my eyebrow.
"Nope because seeing Lysette made me realize that I have no one to blame but me. You weren't in the relationship, I was."
Closing the top on my salad, I took a sip of water just processing what is being said to me. It's almost heartwarming to see her evolve and grow into a more mature women. "I am happy that you are finally getting it." I gave a genuine smile, of course she returned it immediately.
She grabbed my hand gently, "I know that I messed up but I really do want to be a good friend to you."
I sigh heavily, what could it really hurt to be friends with her? She seems to want to make things right between us. Besides all the negative things aside, Janell is a fun person to be around. So I gave her hand squeeze, "we can try to see what happens."
She pulled her hand away slowly, her fingertips lingering just for a moment. Her eyes study our connected skin until they seperate. "alright that is more than what I expected."
I checked the time, I should get a move on back to the office so I can close out the day.
"Can I walk you back to your office?"
I shrug my shoulder, "sure."
We gather our things, she pays the bill and we leave. We hit the sidewalk and fall in behind a crowd.
"So why didn't you press charges on Lysette?" Janell asks.
"I been in her shoes, besides we fought even though I didn't want to. She was hurt so the last thing she needed was a damn law suit."
"That's big of you."
"Well as long as she knows that I won't let it slide again. If she tries me- it is what it is."
She nods, "noted and I would not blame you." We reach my building so we stand there for a moment. "She wants to sit down with both of us."
"No." I say frankly. "I said I sympathize with her but I'm not going to drag this out."
She rubs her face nervously, "I totally agree but she just wants answers besides she doesn't exactly trust my word anymore."
"I feel for you big dog but I can't get caught up in your mess. I have moved on from this, Amari and I trying to get things straight-"
"Wait, Amari?" She looks devastated. I didn't mean to bring her up but she just occupies a lot my mind. I really wasn't trying to throw her up in Janell's face.
"Look, my bad but you had to know that I wasn't sitting around pining over you especially when you had made things so clear." I rub her arm gently. I wasn't trying to pick a fight. "We can still be friends though."
