Days and nights pass with barely any effort and my thoughts consumed me. I found myself avoiding social media and throwing myself into work constantly. Mallory made good on her word and I got that promotion. As excited as I was about the increase in my commission, I didn't celebrate it. There was too much to be done. Casime seemed to be rather busy as well this past few weeks so I barely saw him.
Somehow I had forgotten that the holidays were coming and I had told my mom that I would be home this year. Why in the fuck did I do that? She has been blowing me up, badgering me about when I would get there. Apparently everyone was excited to see me so I knew that I couldn't back out.
"Momma, I know what I had said last month but I just got this promotion at work and I don't think," I rub my face in frustration because I know she won't let this slide. I adjust my phone between my shoulder and ear so I could unlock my apartment door.
"Naomi Ciera Wilton, I know you aren't trying to tell me that you aren't coming?" I can see her squinting her eyes at me in my head. I groan as a response. "Don't make that noise. Now I made your favorite sweets this year and your father misses you. You know you are his favorite." I open the door and kick it close. Kicking off my shoes by the couch, I flop down on it.
"He shouldn't have favorites Momma." I chuckle.
"You know how your sister can get on his nerves from time to time." I hear her laugh.
"That's only because she is just like him." I say playfully.
"You got that right." There is a pause of silence when I hear her sigh. "Naomi, I want you home this year, no excuses. I haven't seen my own daughter in two years."
"Momma, we can video chat whenever you want to. You just don't like the technology."
I can tell she was getting frustrated. "That's not the same and you know it. I'm playing the Mommy card. You better have your tail here come Thanksgiving. And that's final."
Like a child, I bow my head because I know she is serious. "Okay Momma. I will fly out tomorrow. Hopefully, I can snag a ticket at the last minute. If anything changes with the flight, I will call you. Okay?"
"Good, now I'm going to get back into the kitchen before you father starts eating the pies." I can hear him in the background screaming. "That's what your old ass get for being greedy. Damn it, James if it that hot, just put it down." I shake my head laughing and hang up.
"What's so funny?" I hear Casime come in from a long day at work.
"Momma and Daddy. You know how they are." I say casually.
"So you made your mind up about going down there?" He follows my lead and plops down on the other sofa, shoeless.
"I didn't get a choice," I laugh recalling how stern my Momma can be. "You know how my momma is when she wants something done. Besides, it might be nice to see my family and get away..."
"From Janell." He says. "That girl is funny. She is trying to give you space but seems to forget you have to call less. Atleast the flowers she sent look amazing on the coffee table." Casime says playfully.
Not really seeing the humor, I sigh. "Yeah, I can't blame her though. she did say that she wasn't going to stop."
"Do you like her? You know enough to actually date her?" He looks at me, awaiting a response.
"You know that's the funny thing, Cas. Sometimes I find myself trying to dumb our connection down to just sex but I don't know. These last couple weeks, she has given me every sign that she really wants me beyond fucking. It's strange but I keep telling myself not to trust it."
