Reuben. [III]

The abbot palace was situated high upon a hill overlooking the port city of Calavaria. It was needless to say, looked to be the most extravagant abode of all places in the province of Calavaria.

I stared at the gigantic structure in front of me in wordless silence, only with a brow raised.

The place looked nothing sort of a place that a holy man devoid of any greed or mundane temptations of the world would reside in. It was sort of a lavish tower that grew from the ground as an albino plant reaching for the sun. From what I could see, the tower was adorned with golden dooms and the pillars were ostentatiously painted in brilliant gold. The walls were so meticulously built that they looked every bit like the abode of a monarch rather than a humble monastery.

"Such shameless extravagance! I see they dare to do a lot." Gilbert beside me spat out in utter disdain.

"(Chuckle) If they didn't dare, would they be bold enough to extort money from passing travellers some openly?" I said with a shake of my head.

"Sire, they had the audacity to build this opulent place by sucking away on our citizens, you need only but to say the word and I shall have this so-called holy abbot kneel and beg before you my Lord." Gilbert mouthed in stern subservience.

"No need to rush. Let us first meet this supposed holy man. Remember a section of our covey is already afflicted with the unknown corrodes disease and only this abbot holds the key to cure all of them." I said, Gilbert silently gritted his teeth but said no more for he knew I was right.

With tacit understanding, we made our way towards the big gold-clad entrance of the abbot palace. But we were stopped on our tread by the guards at the doors.

"Halt you lot. What business do you have in the revered abbot palace?" One of the guards, who didn't really look like a guard, but more like a nouveau riche disciple of the abbot palace, mouthed out in a crude demeanor.

"We are here to see the abbot who can resurrect the dead." Gilbert said in his usual hard-nosed tone.

"Oh? And you think you can just barge in here to see the Divine One like he is some ordinary roadside small potato?" The other guard scoffed, "Go get in line. Our Divine One is very busy at the moment."

My lips curled up in an arch at the duo's conceited arrogance. It seemed like all the disciples of the abbot palace were infected with this disease of arrogance.

I eyed Gilbert pointedly and he, having understood my cue went forward to hand the two guards the royal token and said, "We have some serious business with the revered abbot of yours. I hope you will not delay our meeting with your Divine One."

The two pretentious guards, when they saw the royal imperial token had gone visibly pale to the eyes. Without another word, the both of them rushed inside the palace in a haste; none of their prior haughty nature discernible any longer.

And that is how pretentious humans really were. They dared to be smug and high and mighty in front of those who they deemed beneath them. But when faced with personals who they could not seem to compare to in power and might, they became as meek as cowardly mice.

How laughable!

Very soon, the answer we were waiting for outside the abbot's palace came to us; as in, the very much revered abbot himself walked out of his doors to welcome us, just as expected.
