I shifted nervously in my seat. Harry had been in my office for nearly 40 minutes talking endlessly about our joint cases. He was telling me how he thoroughly agreed with me in saying that we don't want to be caught unprepared. By this point he was just giving me details on how he was planning on increasing the amount of Aurors in the office so that they can be called out at any time to deal with whatever threats appear.
I prayed to Merlin that if I gave quick and blunt answers and stayed strictly professional that none of my personal qualities will shine through. Personal qualities that Harry might recognise.
I zoned out momentarily as I reached for a sip of my restored coffee, but when I heard what he was saying I nearly spat it out all over again.
"...I was hoping you would come to that War Reunion at Hogwarts..."
I blinked and sat up straight, placing my chipped red mug back on its coaster. What'd he say?
"Sorry. Could you repeat that?"
He paused in his talking to tear his eyes away from the parchment he was reading. He cleared his throat, "Your husband was around at the time of the war wasn't he? There's a reunion in celebration of the Dark Lord's demise, didn't you know? I was hoping we could have as many skilled witches and wizards as possible. Such a large congregation of us might attract one of these attacks. You said so yourself, we can't be unprepared."
Dammit. I did say that.
I bit my lip. I'd already thought about going, and if Harry hasn't recognised me so far, who's to say he will? It's only one evening. Nothing could go wrong. Could it?
Don't jinx yourself, I thought with an internal eyeroll.
"I'll speak to my husband, I'm sure we can go." By that I meant I was going to tell Draco we were going without giving him much of a choice.
Harry nodded his head and smiled.
"Great," he stood up and extended his hand to me, "thank you for your time, Mrs Malfoy, but I think this concludes everything I'd wanted to go over, I'll be sure to owl you if anything new develops."
I stood up as well, taking his hand to shake, "thank you, Mr Potter. No one else wanted to listen to me," I joked half heartedly.
He smiled before turning to leave my office, but not before throwing a quick, "I hope to be working closely with you in the future."
I hope not, I thought nervously before collapsing back into my leather chair, you'll be sure to recognise me, Harry.
I pursed my lips and snatched a spare piece of parchment to RSVP to the reunion. Scribbling down an answer on behalf of myself and Draco, I forged his signature quickly on the end of the letter for authentication as well as adding my own (by this point in our marriage I knew his signature almost as well as my own).
"Eden!" I called, "can you send this up to the owlery for me, dear?"
Eden's strawberry blonde head peeked round the door with that same cheery smile she wears all the time.
"Of course, Mrs Malfoy," she replied kindly, "I'll take it right up," she whisked into the room and slipped the letter into the pocket of her dark purple blazer.
"Thanks, Eden. I think I'll be finishing up soon, you can leave a bit early," I told her with a soft smile, "get back to that boyfriend of yours,"
I smirked slightly as she blushed and mumbled a quick thank you before scurrying out my office with a smile on her face.
