By 12 o'clock, Max had fallen in to a deep sleep. she needed it, and it felt good. her pink cheeks were stained with tears she couldn't remember crying, and her body lay completely still. the sun had set, covering hawkins in a blanket of darkness. the air was warm and thick, there was no breeze, and still max found herself shivering and diving deeper under her blanket every so often.

Everything was silent as the town drifted in to dream land,

suddenly, max awoke with a sharp inhale. she thought she had heard something, but maybe it was just a bird outside. nothing to concern her.

tap tap tap

but there it was again. this time much more violent. whoever was at max's bedroom window intended on getting max's attention, and they succeeded.
max trudged herself out of bed and walked over to her window, where she flung open her curtains, and flinched in shock when she saw who had been trying to wake her.

"El?"

Max stared at the small brunette clinging on to the pipe that went up the side of her house, and just so happened to pass by the red head's bedroom window.

"hey max, can u let me in?"

Max snapped herself back in to reality, and almost silently opened the window so that her family wouldn't be disturbed.
"el! what the hell are you doing here?!" max whisper-shouted (more aggressively than she had intended). "i just..." el looked down at her white adidas shoes, and max was silently thankful she was speaking quietly. "i just think we need to talk about something." el dragged her gaze from the floor to max's light sapphire eyes, they drowned el in a sea of mixed emotions, and the brunette knew that max had an idea of what was going to come next.
El reached in to her pocket, maintaining eye contact with max throughout the whole process, and pulled out a neatly folded piece of paper which max recognised instantly.
