• Thea and Benny had been in more odd places together than they would have ever expected. Hotels, for example, were the least odd. Not for sex, or money, but for something far more interesting than those things.
Can you guess what?
I'll give you a hint, it is way more attractive than the idea of sex.
...Chess!
Chess was far more interesting than sex. At least to Benny Watts, and maybe to Thea as well. Considering how angry she was with him, anything would be more interesting. She wasn't terrible at chess, and often could almost match Bennys skills as well.
People assume that just because she is a woman without proper education that she isn't intelligent. They assume that just because she is an artist she has nothing more to her brain besides the fact that she is mad with artistic genius.
As the narrator, what I am trying to say is- her brain does move fast, maybe as fast as Bennys.
Maybe that is why they are such a terrible match for each other because they are equal.
And they both love to compete. Dominating what they want is what they love, but they are completely equal in brains, and arrogance. So how is one ever to win?
What are the chances that they would be remotely even a good match, considering one has to lose?
Benny would win, and he would win every time.
Thea would win, and she would win forever and always.
At least that is what they both thought most of the time. But that day was an exception. Neither felt like they had won. Maybe they keep trying to win at something impossible when the opposing factor is so equally matched.
Thea was angry. And this is not the only time when she had been angry at Benny, but this was far different. He had asked about something so personal, so destructive, so-
"Thea?"
Benny had stopped her racing thoughts with the sound of his midwestern accent that she hated that she didn't hate. Although she wanted to destroy his shield with silence, she couldn't help but automatically answer, "Yes?"
