Chapter 20
Riley’s POV
I shook my head, confused to why he called me ‘gorgeous’. “You were the one in Massachutes who tried to kidnap me, weren’t you?”
“Yes, now I’m trying to do it again. So put the fucking ward down.” He snapped at me, causing me to jump in my skin.
“No.” I said more confidently than I felt.
“Fuck.” He muttered and slipped out of the room. He came back holding a girl by her hair, and shut the door behind him. He pulled her face up by her chin so I could see her face. It was the girl from Sunny Robins, the brunette one that Josh had spilled soda all over. “Put the ward down or I’ll kill her.” He said, a dagger appearing in his hands. “Ten seconds.”
I stared at him, wondering if he’ll actually do it. But I didn’t want to risk it for her life. As I was about to agree, he stabbed her in the leg with the knife. He didn’t even give me five seconds. She let out a scream as I muffled mine with my hands over my mouth. I felt tears fall down my face as I glared at him.
Why wasn’t anyone hearing this right and calling for help? Even though the door was closed, someone had to have heard all of this, right?
He shrugged, moving closer to the ward. “I had to show that I was true to my word. Next, I’ll hit the heart. Put. It. Down.”
He raised a brow at me when I didn’t answer. “No?” His hand lifted and I screamed out to stop him. Amazingly, he did. “Are you ready to listen to me?”
I nodded in tears and put the ward down like he’d told me to. I felt exposed when I did, as if I were naked in front of him, but just hoped that he’d let the girl go like he promised. “Just stop hurting her. Please.”
“Good choice.” He grinned and tossed her to the ground. She let out a cry in pain as she hit the floor and I felt my heart squeeze in my chest.
I tore off a piece of the bed sheet, then hopped off the bed and hurried over to her. She was sobbing, her skin pale from the blood loss. This was my fault. Mason was after me and she just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. With shaking hands, I tied the cloth around the bloody wound in an attempt to stop the blood. I wasn’t sure if it did since the whole thing quickly was soaked in red. I tore off another piece of cloth and proceeded to wrap it again.
“Are you okay?” I asked her.
She nodded, licking her pale lips. “Thank you.”
“Don’t bother helping her. Her sister will come and heal her.” Mason sighed out as I watched him blow out one of the candles and set it aside. “When one gets hurt, the other feels it.”
I turned to see him patiently waiting on the desk for us to finish. I’d almost forgotten he was there because I was so worried about this girl. “What are you talking about?”
“She’s a witch. One of my witches.” He answered like it was obvious.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I slowly turned to the girl. “Is that…true?”
Tears started streaming down her face more as she took in my question. “I’m sorry.”
I dropped my hands from her injured leg and slid away from her, trying to rub her blood off of my hands. She was a Shadow witch. She was on Mason’s side. I can’t believe I fell for her scared act when she was evil this whole time. I let down my ward trying to save her, lost whatever leverage I had against Mason.
Making up my mind, I quickly moved towards the bed and tried to put the ward up before I felt a heavy weight on top of me. I let out a startled gasp, knowing it was Mason. He had me pinned down on my back by my wrists. A grin graced his lips as he looked down at me. “You always fall for that one, Riley. And it pleases me more and more every time.”
