Chapter 10

Riley’s POV

Last night, I had checked to go look for my necklace, but I couldn’t find it. I had a feeling that the cops took it for evidence.

After taking a shower and getting ready, I took a seat on my bed and sighed. I could still feel the stirring in my chest every time I think about what happened between Adam and I last night. I couldn’t help but think ‘what if’? What if I kissed him? That would destroy Liz.

I took a deep breath and jumped off of my bed. It’s Friday and I don’t have any classes all weekend. And I’d promised Mr. Morris that I’d get a job the first week to support myself even though he gave me five hundred to start on.

I grabbed my backpack and left my room hurriedly. Before I could even get my door shut, I saw two figures walking towards me. It was Josh and Derek.

Rolling my eyes, I started to walk opposite way from where they were coming. I could hear them jogging after me and then in seconds, they fell in step beside me.

“We heard what happened about the Daniel kid.” Derek started. “You okay?”

“I’m fine.” I grounded out.

“Grouchy in the morning, aren’t we?” Josh teased.

I stopped just to glare at him. “This isn’t a joke. I almost died. Again. You think this is amusing?”

He rolled his eyes.

“He couldn’t have been a Shadow, though. He’s a nice kid.” Derek said. “He’s been going to school with us for two years and he never attacked us or anything.”

I opened the door to the staircase and began for the stairs with the boys behind me. “Maybe he’s was waiting for the perfect moment to strike?”

“Possibly.”

“Um, guys.” I began, pursing my lips. “Do Shadows normally have black eyes?”

“Sometimes.” Josh said. “If the magic’s too strong.”

“And do they have a creepy voice telling them what to do?”

Derek frowned. “You heard a voice telling Daniel what to do?”

“I don’t know. But I know I heard something.” I told them. We finally made it downstairs and out onto the school grounds. I could feel eyes on me as we walked across the field. Everyone was staring at me.

“Where are you going, Riley?” Derek asked me.

“I need to find a job.” I said. “I promised a friend of mine.”

“Do you need help?” He asked, hesitantly.

I turned around to face them. “You two want to help me?”

Josh had a bored look on his face while Derek just smiled. “Sure. Maybe we could get you a job where we work. We’re supposed to be heading over there anyways.”

I couldn’t help but smile back at him. “I’d like that.”

“Good.” He said. “Follow me.”

“You want a job? You got it.” The big chef said. Derek told me his name was Larry but it didn’t really suit him. “I need as many people I can get. We’ve lost all of our waiters because they all go to college.”

I smiled. “Thank you so much.”

“You can actually start today. Give Derek and Josh a break for a bit.” He said.
