Riley’s POV

“Exuro!” Josh screamed. When he said that, the ground in front of me suddenly went up in flames. My eyes widened at what just happened. Clumsily, I felt on my butt and hastily scooted away from the flames.

“Exuro!” He shouted again.

The flames doubled in size.

“Stop it!” I cried out, my eyes glued on the flames. How was he even doing this? This isn’t possible! I tried to keep my distance but all that did was attract the flames more. It’s like it had a life of its own.

“Use your powers, Riley. Blow out the flames.” Josh snapped at me.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about! So just stop! Stop!” I yelled at him.

“Josh, she’s not going to stop it. Cut it out.” Derek told his friend sternly. “It’s getting way out of control.”

“I can handle it.” Josh growled, keeping his eyes on the flames in front of me. “Exuro!”

“Josh!” Derek exclaimed.

Tears started to stream down my eyes as the wild flames caught onto my jeans. All too quickly, I felt it burn through and scorch my skin. I tried to pat it out but the more I did that, the more the flames grew.

Suddenly, the flames vanished. I glanced up at Josh and Derek to see that they look as surprised as I looked.

“Are you okay?” Adam appeared from beside me with a concerned look on his face.

I used the back of my hand to wipe away my tears and let out a sigh of relief. “Yeah. But my legs.” The pain in my legs felt kind of numb now because of the flames.

“Just stay here for a minute while I talk to them, okay? Then we’ll go to the nurse.” He assured me.

I nodded, wondering what we’ll even tell the nurse. That a guy with powers conjured up a fire and burned me?

Adam got to his feet and made his way over to Josh. He grabbed ahold of his collar angrily. “What is wrong with you?” He snarled at him.

“Adam, he—“

Adam whirled around and glared at Derek. “Congelasco.” He said and instantly, Derek froze in place. Like he literally froze in place. It was a horrible sight to see. He looked so pale and lifeless. It was horrifying.

I gasped silently, muffling it with my hand. What are these people?

Adam turned back to Josh furiously. “I should kill you for what you did to her.”

“All I wanted to do was bring her powers back.” Josh retorted. “You know we need the both of you to protect us, all of us. And you’re just wasting our time!”

“That’s not your place to say, Josh. You—God!” Adam dropped him and ran a hand through his hair. Taking a moment to think, he turned to Derek’s body and sighed. “Regelo.”

Quickly, the color seemed to come back to Derek’s face and he fell to his knees, panting.

With a groan, Adam looked at the both of them disappointedly. “I could sense you using magic from the other side of the school, Josh. That means they could’ve felt it too.” He told them. “So, you two got what you were afraid of. They might be on their way now.”
