"I'm sure you'll look gorgeous no matter what you wear, Mercy." I heard Hermione say in a comforting voice.
"Yeah, so what if you can't find a dress? That's not what the Yule Ball's about!" Ginny chimed in. I turned the corner of the corridor behind the three girls, putting two and tow together, I realised Mercy must not have a dress yet. Even though the ball is in three days! By now, I had heard she was going with Fred. Even though apparently they were going 'just as friends' I wasn't convinced. He certainly didn't just have friendship on his mind. Thinking, probably irrationally, I took the next exit off the school grounds and felt myself apparate felt myself apparate to a shop I knew, just a few miles away from the coast.
Mercy
As much as Hermione and Ginny tried to comfort me, I couldn't help being slightly upset that I would turn up to the event of the year in such a simple dress while every other girl would be in stunning ball gowns. Plus, though I love Fred's company, I couldn't help wishing my date was a quiet, lovely man who always smelt like chocolate and books. Maybe Fred would be good for me, with him I could move on from Lupin with someone my own age and stop fantasising about impossible things. Plus it would stop the judgmental looks I've been receiving from Snape every potions lesson. Although, now every time I suspected he was reading my thoughts, I'd just start yelling curse words in my head to get him to fuck off.
The evening of the Yule ball, we all ran to our dorms after our last class to start getting ready. Even though we had two hours until it started. Me, Ginny and Hermione raced through the door of our shared room and they grabbed their dresses from the cupboard. I was about to do the same when I noticed a white box on my bed. On top of it was a note that read :
I overheard you saying you hadn't got a dress yet and thought this might come in handy.
Curiously, I opened the box, aware of the two girls watching me now. It was filled with blue material and as I lifted the dress out by it's shoulders, we all gasped. The bodice of the dress was made of a midnight blue satin, silver jewels encrusted on the seams. It had a deep v-neck neckline and on either side of where the neckline finished, there were two silver moons, mirroring each other. Down the middle of the bodice, more silver jewels lay, almost star-like. The skirt was long, a slightly darker blue, the only added decoration of it being the shining stars were the bodice met the skirt starting at the waist line. Turning the dress around in my hands, I noticed attached to the back was a mesh cape, also covered in stars and moons from head to toe.
"It's beautiful." I whispered, turning to look at my friends, whose mouths were gaped open.
"It's so... you." Ginny said. She was right, whoever picked this knew me well. "Who got it for you?"
"No idea." I replied, though I had some idea. The moons gave you away, Moony.
