“Did you really want me to shower with you?” Greg asked doubtfully as he accompanied his wife back to the guest house at Richard and Marion’s beach house.
Susan blushed. “I don’t think that came out quite right. I do need to get cleaned up, and I wondered if you wanted to shower too … but not together,” she explained apologetically.
“And to think I thought you wanted to spend time with me,” Greg said with a playful pout.
“I do … I do need that desperately, Greg. Honestly, after last night, you have no idea how much I need to feel close to you, but it’s only been two days since I lost the baby. It’s going to be a while before we can be close again.”
“I know, Susan. I was teasing,” Greg assured her. “And I did think you were being optimistic to think we could shower together just yet … unless of course you needed my help. Do you?”
“I’m fine in the shower on my own, though I probably could use your help in getting the kids up and ready,” Susan suggested.
“I can do that,” Greg agreed as they arrived at the sliding glass door to the guest house.
As it turned out, there was no need to get the kids up. When Greg and Susan walked in they found both Zackary and Jessie in the living area, watching an episode of Sponge Bob on TV.
“Hi Mom,” Zackary called when they walked in.
“Hi Mom,” Jessie echoed.
“Hi Mom?” Susan questioned her daughter.
“I mean Mama,” Jessie corrected self-consciously.
“Good morning Zack. Jessie, you can call me ‘Mom’ if you want to,” Susan told her. “It’s okay.”
Jessie nodded, looking more at the TV than at Susan adding “Hi Papa,” as Greg walked in directly behind Susan.
“Good morning Greg,” Zackary said looking up more fully.
“Good morning,” Greg greeted them as he joined them on the sofa and Jessie climbed into his lap for a good morning kiss. “How is everyone this morning?”
“Good,” Zackary reported. “Richard has a nice house.”
“He does, doesn’t he?” Susan agreed.
“How about you, Jessie? How is Papa’s girl this morning?” Greg asked.
“I’m okay, Papa. Nobody dreamed about fires last night,” Jessie reported seriously.
Zackary turned to look about her in surprise. “Do dream about fires too? I thought it was just Mom and me.”
“Uh huh. We all do. Papa too, don’t you Papa?” Jessie asked as she twisted around in Greg’s lap to look at his face.
“We do, but hopefully we’ll all dream about the fire a little less from here on out,” Greg told them.
Zackary stared at Greg. “That is so strange.”
“What is?” Susan asked as she watched her son and her husband interact.
“That Greg dreams of fires too. I thought it was just because you were in a show about a fire that I dreamed that,” Zackary said to Greg.
“You dreamed that I was there? In the fire?” Greg asked in surprise.
Zackary nodded. “Were you in a show about a fire?” he asked curiously.
“No. I’ve been in lots of shows Zack, but nothing like that. Nothing about burning to death a fire,” Greg said seriously.
“Is that what happened?” Zackary asked in surprise looking at Greg. Then turning to his mother he added, “You never told me that, Mom.”
