I woke up to my hand being squeezed a little bit too tightly and mumbling coming from above me.

     “Am I dead?” I murmured, opening my eyes and sitting up. There was no pain my side and I felt as if I were floating on air. One Sudden move and I’d plummet towards Earth and fall to my death. (I should remember that line for a story sometime.)

      “No, Kait, you’re very much alive.” I looked up and Liam’s brown eyes were staring back at me.

       “Shit,” I mumbled, “I could’ve been up in heaven reading right now.”

He laughed a little, “I’ll bring you to the book store on the way home, how’s that?”

      I nodded my head, “Okay.” Closing my eyes, I leaned back against the pillows. Liam rubbed circles on my hand.

      “How are you feeling?” he asked softly.

       “Like a cloud,” I said.

Liam laughed again, “Just get some sleep, okay?” You’ll feel better when you wake up.”

I nodded my head again and let sleep overtake me again into the world of bubble gum, cotton candy and the best thing known to man: Books.

~~~
I was let out of the hospital a few hours later. Liam had bought me a set of clothes from the store down the street, only he had gotten both the jeans and the shirt a little bit too big.
I wasn’t going to admit about how pulling my jeans up every few steps were making me feel self conscious though. He helped me enough and I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
       “Pick any book you want,” Liam said, walking into Barnes and Noble with me.
      “Any book?” I asked, turning to look at him.
He nodded his head, “Any book,” He repeated. “But make it quick because you’re not supposed to be on your feet.” His eyes lowered to my stomach where the bullet wound was.
I nodded my head and turned on my heel, not wasting any time going towards the young adult books and skimming through them.
I decided to pick up an old favorite by Terra Lynn Childs. Turning, I went to find Liam only to run right into him.
His arms went around me to keep me from falling backwards.
      “Are you okay?” he asked softly, keeping his voice quiet.
I nodded my head, “Yeah, I’m fine, I just wasn’t expecting you to be right behind me,” I told him.
     Liam nodded his head, “Understandable.” His eyes went down to the book I was holding, “Is that all?” he asked.
      “Yeah,” I replied, “Let’s go back to your flat.”
He nodded again and brought me to the cash, paying for the book before bringing me to the car.
As soon as I was seated inside, I reached into the bag and started reading the book.
Liam got in and started the car, “Are you hungry?” he asked, “It’s been awhile since your last meal.”
Biting down on my bottom lip, I shook my head, “No, I’m fine.” I answered.
     Liam didn’t say anything back, instead he drove into McDonald’s, going through the drive-through getting hamburgers and chicken nuggets. He handed me the bag and the smell of the food over took me.
My stomach rumbled and twisted inside me.
I stuffed that feeling down and tried to focus on something other than the food as Liam drove to his flat. He brought in the food and I followed after him with my book.
     He didn’t say anything as he sat down on the couch and turned Netflix on the TV. I sat down on the opposite side of the couch, kicking off my shoes and tucking my feet underneath me. Opening my book, I ignored him (Or I guess tried to) as he pulled out a big Mac from the bag and started eating it.
     Liam had settled on a batman movie.
After the first twenty minutes of the movie I gave up trying to read and ended up watching the movie with him.
       “If Batman is rich why doesn’t he just pay people to fight the Joker for him?” I asked.
       “It wouldn’t be an interesting story,” he replied, “Just watch it.”
Sighing, I turned my head back towards the screen and watched the movie.
Liam on the other hand picked up the box of chicken nuggets and held them out towards me.
Unable to fight the feeling of an empty stomach any longer I took two of them and ate them quietly.
      Liam set them down between us and crossed his arms over his chest as he watched the movie.
Afterwards, when it ended, I was laying on the couch with my head in Liam’s lap. His hand was stroking my hair, which was fanned out on the other empty half of the couch.
      “That movie made no sense,” I commented as the credits rolled by.
      “It was a good movie; I don’t see why you didn’t like it.” Liam replied.
Rolling my eyes, I sat up and pushed my hand through my hair, trying to fix it so that it wouldn’t look weird.
      “I liked it,” I told him, “I just wouldn’t watch it again.”
He rolled his eyes, “Whatever, are you hungry?” he asked getting up.
      “A little bit, we still have pizza, don’t we?” I asked.
      “It’s probably bad,” Liam said, “It’s been out all afternoon.”
He threw the trash out and came back. His eyes met mine. “Why don’t we go out to dinner.” He said.
I bit down on my bottom lip, “Okay, sounds good.”
He smiled, “Brilliant.”
