“Are you sure this is a good idea?” I asked for the billionth time tonight.
Liam nodded his head, “Positive. The doctor said as long as you don’t make any sudden movements you’ll be fine.” He grinned and opened the car door for me and helping me out. I smoothed down the fuzzy blue fabric of the sweater I was wearing to hopefully disguise my disfigured-bandaged up side.
“You look beautiful,” he stated, “Now come on before the lines get too long.” He pulled me towards the line for getting into the amusement park.
To be honest, I was a little skeptical about the whole idea of it. But Liam seemed excited, so I agreed to go. I wouldn’t have to go on any of the rides, so I should be safe.
“Come on Kait,” Liam called after buying our tickets.
I merely laughed and followed him inside. “I thought we were getting dinner,” I asked him.
Liam turned and smiled at me, “This does count as dinner,” he gestured to a nearby hot dog stand.
“I thought we’d go to Nando’s or something,” I told him.
He rolled his eyes, “I’m more exciting than that.” He brought me to a merry go round and gave the attendant two tickets.
I couldn’t help but laugh again, “Really Liam?” I asked him.
He shrugged his shoulders, “The Doctor said to take it slow, remember?”
I went up to a white colored horse and got up on it. “I remember what she said. But I don’t think she meant go to an amusement park.”
Liam shrugged his shoulders and climbed up onto the black horse that was beside me.
“I don’t see what’s wrong with it. Are you enjoying yourself?” he asked.
The ride started and classical music started to play. The horse cranked itself up and down.
“I guess so,” I said. I risked a glance at Liam and he was looking right at me, a smile was on his lips. “Why are you doing that?” I asked, feeling my cheeks burn up.
He just grinned wider and shook his head, “I can’t help it.” He leaned over and pressed his lips to my cheek, “It’s hard to look away from you.”
If it were possible, I’m sure my cheeks would have been on fire by now. I ended up looking down at the painted horse’s mane and didn’t say anything. I felt Liam’s hand on my own and looked up again.
“Are you okay?” he asked, intertwining out fingers together. “Is your side hurting?”
I shook my head, “I’m fine,” I answered. Concern was written all over his face. He squeezed my hand.
“You were right,” he said, “I shouldn’t have brought you here.” As soon as the ride stopped, he helped me off of it and brought me back towards the car.
I stopped him just as he was unlocking the car door.
“Liam, I’m fine, seriously. The pain medication hasn’t worn off yet.” I met his eyes, “I’m fine.” I repeated.
Liam closed his eyes and let out a long sign, “I know you are, Kait, it’s just…” he trailed off and sighed again, “I guess I just feel guilty about you getting hurt… and I want to make up for it.”
I bit down on my bottom lip, was this all just him feeling guilty? Letting me stay at his house, everything.
“There’s nothing to make up for,” I told him. I looked away and focused on the car door mirror instead of his face. “I have a little bit of money saved up in the bank. I can buy an apartment and from there I’m sure my insurance will help me with the remains of my old house and I can go from there.” I looked up at him, “You don’t have to worry about anything.”
He didn’t say anything for the longest time, and I found myself wishing that he wasn’t going to agree with it, that he was going to ask me to stay with him.
“I can’t ask you to stay with me,” he said eventually. “It’s too dangerous.” He reached out and touched my cheek, “I don’t want you to get hurt because of me.”
I flinched away from his touch, “Then I guess it’s settled.” I said, keeping my voice low. “I’ll head over to the bank and get a hotel room for the night then go flat shopping in the morning.”
“Kaitlyn…” Liam said softly.
I shook my head and cut him off, “No, you’re right, Liam. It’s for the best.” I met his eyes, “We wouldn’t want me getting hurt, would we?” I turned on my heel and walked for the road. It was going to be a long walk to the bank.
I didn’t bother even turning around to see if he got into his car. Hearing the engine start up was enough to tell me that I was just his charity case.
