To his friends, Logan's soulmate shadow's shape was still up for debate. To Logan himself, the whole idea that there were soulmates was up for debate. Yes, he had been born with an oddly-shaped divot on his wrist... and yes, all his friends had something similar. (Though none of there's looked nearly as snakelike as his did.)

Patton's shadow was shaped like a curvy cross. Roman had developed a habit of wearing long sleeve shirts so as to hide his, but Logan remembered a thundercloud from when they were smaller.

Logan had seen people who claimed that theirs were KPop finger-hearts, tidal waves, dragons breathing fire. What a load of nothing.

Supposedly, his "snake" would light up with color when he first met his soulmate. After their first kiss, it would disappear altogether. It wasn't that Logan wasn't interested in romance. But how to find romance when everyone else believes that they're destined for someone?

"IT'S VALENTINE'S DAY MOTHERFUCKERS!" Roman's brother Remus screeched, poking his head into Roman's face time screen. A short (cute) boy with scales on his face ducked in to pull Remus away from the camera.

"Thanks, Janus," Roman said. "Now, wouldn't it be magical if we met our soulmates today?"

"Yeah!" Patton agreed.

Logan shrugged. He held his phone sideways, so his left hand was holding it up and his right could continue to write a paper for class.

"Lo," Roman said, "Is it my imagination or did your soulmate mark light up for a second?"

Logan pulled his hand away from his phone and checked. "No."

"I saw it too, Logan!" Patton said.

"Soulmates aren't real, you guys."

Roman and Patton both raised their eyebrows.

"And besides, no one's in the room with me."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that day, Logan had to stop himself from rubbing his "soulmate" mark. Was it his imagination or did it feel warmer? His imagination. Definitely. He slammed his hands down and reached for the clarinet case under his desk. Slowly piecing the instrument together, he heard a knock on his bedroom door.
"Come in!" he said.
Janus, the boy from earlier, now wearing a bowler hat, stepped inside. "Can I have a piece of paper?"
Logan handed one over. Janus scrawled, I'm on a dare but I can't say it because that's the dare. Technically I'm not saying it.
Logan rolled his eyes, but liked Janus's audacity. "And you're in my room because...?"
Janus scribbled, It's a dare to rule you off my possible soulmate list.
"Okay, look, my wrist isn't magically lighting up, and neither is yours," Logan bent his hand so the other boy could see the inside of his wrist.
"Ah, uh, Logan," Janus looked awkwardly at him, "I am known for lying but.. Take my word for it when I say that... we're soulmates." He lifted his arm, took off a yellow glove, and Logan saw a shape with glasses shimmering blue and purple and pink and red.
The thoughts that ran through his head are as follows:
My symbol is a pair of glasses?
Wait, soulmates aren't real, those "glasses" are not me being summed up.
Wait, let's check my own wrist.
Oh shit it's glowing. Is it a snake because Janus has scales on the side of his face?
Logan snapped to attention, sure he was red in the face, as Janus was backing away, looking a bit scared.
"Sorry, I'm not in love with you," he blurted. Janus nodded-shrugged and took off out of the room.
Surely his feeling weren't hurt... soulmates were a silly thing. On principle, Logan wasn't about to let his lovelife be controlled.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Janus was tearing up, and he wasn't sure why. Didn't his soulmate believe in soulmates? He hadn't allowed himself to have crushes on anyone, just in case he met his soulmate. And as it happened, he fell in love with his soulmate when he first saw him on Roman's facetime.

Guess who didn't reciprocate.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Logan's head was pulling him in one direction, and his heart another.
He felt like physically separating the two and letting them go their separate ways. The heart to Janus... (to apologize? To confess its love?) and the head to classes (Logan enjoyed being productive).
But it was 8:00.
"Oh shoot, oh shoot, oh shoot," Logan was late for class. He ran, stumbled, and almost fell down the front steps of the dorm.
He saw the bowler hat a second too late. "Janus!" he yelped, literally tripping over his supposed soulmate.
"Logan!" Janus looked positively terrified.
Logan rubbed at his eyes. What luck. He gathered his stuff and was about to leave when something made him turn back. What if Roman and Patton were right? There was definitely something compelling about the other boy. The fact that Janus was sitting in front of his room told him that he had something going on towards him, too. He felt the snake mark on his wrist warm as he opened his mouth,
"J-janus," (he was never at a loss for words, and this made him stutter even more), "How'd you like to... um, go out with me?"
Janus blushed, his scales turned brighter too, which Logan definitely thought was cute, "Sure."
He stood up and took his hand. The height difference was remarkable, but since they were soulmates, it was meant to be.
Roman would have been proud.
welp.
