My eyes were opening with a flutter, fingers feeling what was beneath them. I felt something smooth yet also soft, a comfort to the material. I engaged my core to sit up but immediately regretted it as I felt a stinging pain. I craned my neck downward to see the damage and found a large spot of blood on my white tank top. The tips of my fingers slid under the hem, pulling up the fabric so I could see the injury. There was a long gash on the right side of my stomach. It had been stitched up but it still looked pretty nasty, dark lines painted out from the red wound.
I braced my arms behind me so I was sort of sitting up on my elbows. There was an angered kind of shouting coming from the hall that I wasn't sure if I wanted to investigate. Deciding in favour of it, I pulled myself from the cot and hobbled toward the door once I realized my legs were weak. As I made my slow way into the hall, the voices got louder and even more enraged. I turned the corner and walked into the hallway and then into the cafeteria. The scene before me made me more scared than when Mateo was cornering me.
Nathan was shouting angrily at Mateo as Gregory and Delilah were trying to hold him back. The others were just standing around and watching the antics ensue. I did the same at first, holding my stomach as I noticed how scared Mateo looked. We'd talked about what evil people the company that put us here was and he told me how they threatened the only family he had left. I had felt empathy for him then and even when he stabbed me. He lost control which I almost envy since I never let myself lose control. Then I remembered that Nathan looked about ready to kill his brother so I spoke up.
"Stop this!" I shouted as loud as I could, voice hoarse and raspy. "You're acting crazy!"
"Georgia," Delilah breathed, letting go of Nathan and rushing to me so she could wrap her arms tightly around me in a hug. "Oh, thank god."
I felt the slight throbbing of pain from my abdomen but I ignored it so she wouldn't stop. She was hugging me again and I honestly didn't care that it took someone trying to murder me to make this happen. As long as she didn't let go, I felt pretty good here for a while. She seemed to remember I was injured, pulling away and looking at my stomach. It wasn't long before she picked up my shirt to examine the cut. I felt a little thrown off by the action but I tried to hide it as I looked back up at the others. Mateo was staring at me with wide eyes but Nathan was still staring at his brother, ears practically steaming.
"Don't hurt him," I said, keeping my eyes strictly on Nathan.
"Sweetie," Delilah said in a kind of condescending tone, dropping the hem of my shirt and looking me in the eyes. "Mateo tried to kill you."
"I remember," I said, nodding as I met his eyes again and tried to smile. "It's not his fault. They made us do it."
Delilah took a step away from me, her eyes wide. "Did you just say 'us?'"
I nodded, feeling the sadness prick my eyes. "When we came here, they threatened my family and said they'd kill them if I didn't try to kill all of you. Same with Mateo. We're all victims here. The only villain is those people who put us up here to kill each other."
I watched as the group took in my words, sort of shrinking in fear or relief or... anything else. Gregory slid down the wall and sat with his knees up and his elbows resting on them. Juniper and Anya sat on the middle table, just staring at the wall or the top of the table. This was the first time I'd noticed that Juniper had tears streaking her cheeks. Nathan just completely left the room, walking into the hallway outside Admin.
