;; Valentine's Day 2021
"Jungwon!"
Without even turning around, Jungwon already knew the familiar yet sweet voice belonged to none other than Choi Jihyun. Smiling at the sound of her voice, Jungwon spun around only to be attacked in a bear hug by his best friend.
That's the catch, they've been stuck as best friends for the past 10 years.
Although it was uncertain whether she felt butterflies whenever she was with Jungwon, the 17 year-old boy was sure about his feelings towards her.
"Any plans? School just ended and all my girl friends have their own Valentines," Jihyun grumbled.
"What happened to your Valentine?" Jungwon asked teasingly.
"You know I don't do Valentines Day! Everything is always so cheesy and red, this generation has no idea about romantic gestures!" Jihyun gagged upon seeing the sight of cliché heart balloons tainted red and pink.
"I have a feeling most of the boys in this school bought their gifts at the same shop," Jungwon commented disapprovingly.
True enough were the school hallways filled with nothing but an endless sea of red and pink which gave Jihyun an eyesore. Grabbing Jungwon's hand, Jihyun briskly walked out of the school while pulling Jungwon along.
"I seriously hate it there," Jihyun grumbled again as she walked alongside her best friend at a much slower pace.
"You seem to hate Valentine's Day a lot," Jungwon chuckled, secretly shooting glances of adoration towards the shorter girl.
"I don't hate it, I'm just more of a hopeless romantic on this stupid day because I can't build up the courage to ask the guy I like out," Jihyun muttered.
Before Jungwon could respond to Jihyun's confession, the smaller girl had sprinted up a steep hill without warning. Mischievously smirking back at her best friend, Jungwon could only smile at her carefree and bold persona.
"Jihyun, how much sugar did you eat today?!" Jungwon panted once he finally caught up with Jihyun up on the tall hilltop.
"I stole my friends' Valentines sweets! You can never have too much chocolate Won," Jihyun winked before throwing her bag to one side.
Raising his hands up in defeat, Jungwon plopped down next to Jihyun before sprawling his arms and legs against the grassy patch they sat on. Jihyun smirked at the easily fatigued boy before laying next to him. Admiring the cotton candy sky above them, Jihyun couldn't help but feel herself succumbing to her feelings for Jungwon.
It was moments like that where she would allow herself to lose to him. She wouldn't have imagined herself to fall for her best friend 7 years later, it was the only time she felt like a hopeless loser in love with the boy of her dreams. Jungwon was the only guy who could make her feel that way despite her efforts in trying to push her feelings away.
"So what happened between you and Heeseung?" Jungwon asked, turning his body to face the girl he secretly loved.
"It simply didn't work out," Jihyun stated as she faced Jungwon.
Raising his eyebrows in surprise, Jungwon nodded understandingly before looking back at the sky. A million thoughts raced through his mind as he pondered about the possibility between him and Jihyun.
Amidst the field of dandelions that surrounded them, the inseparable duo had an inner conflict whether they should take the risk to finally fall in love.
Sitting up, Jungwon plucked out one of the many dandelion flowers that surrounded them. Looking longingly at the flower, Jungwon briefly closed his eyes before silently wishing upon the white, fuzzy seeds from the dandelion. Smiling softly as he opened his eyes, the young boy blew the dandelion seeds in one go, hopefully deeming the legend true that the girl he loves would reciprocate the same feelings back.
"What did you wish for?" Jihyun asked curiously as she gazed into Jungwon's cat-like eyes.
Returning a gaze, Jungwon softly smiled at Jihyun before grabbing a bunch of dandelions and holding it up between them. Closing his eyes briefly again, he made the same exact wish before blowing all the fuzzy seeds in one go again. Smiling cheekily at Jihyun, Jungwon took her hand in his before placing a kiss on it.
"I wished that the girl I loved for the past few years would love me the same. Everyday I wished and prayed that one day she would but I realised that the only way she'd be mine is if I told her," Jungwon admitted as he genuinely looked into Jihyun's eyes.
Smiling at his sudden confession, Jihyun finally realised that he loved her the same. Clasping their hands tightly together, Jihyun scooted closer to her first and last love before laying her head on his shoulder.
There was no other boy like him that would appear in her life ever again, no other guy that could possibly accept her flaws like Jungwon.
"Your wish is my command Yang Jungwon, this girl has been loving you the same for the past few years,"
With the comfort and new-found love that the pair risked their friendship for, both Jungwon and Jihyun sat in each other's embrace as they allowed the strawberry skies to blanket their feelings for each other.
