september 2008"i can't for the life of me figure out what you're so worried about, honey." mrs. fawn fumbled with the package of aluminum foil in her hands, covering up the glass container of dessert on the kitchen counter. "i know you have trouble meeting new people, but the biersacks are the kindest couple–"
"i don't think it's them she's worried about, mom." damien smirked and mumbled under his breath as he walked over to open the fridge.
"shut up." dahlia lifted her head from resting it in her hands, tossing her elbows off of the kitchen table and glaring at her older brother.
"don't tell me you're all worked up over that boy." her mother nearly rolled her eyes, but simply shook her head. "i've barely ever even heard him talk. did something happen at school?" her eyebrows furrowed as her soft eyes filled with concern.
"yeah, lia. did something happen at school?" damien teased, having his own guesses at what might've been eating at his little sister.
"damien. leave the girl alone, for god's sake." their father walked into the room just in time, adjusting his belt around the low end of his waist and fixing his pants pockets as damien shot him a side eye. "i'd rather her be scared of a kid like that than have anything to do with him." dahlia hung her head down low at this comment, nervously tucking her hair behind her ear. "is everyone ready?"
"i guess so." dahlia muttered, hesitantly slipping off of the tall kitchen chair and letting her old vans hit the tile floor. she clung to her off the shoulder sweater as she followed her dad and brother out of the front door, her mom resting a gentle, comforting hand on her shoulder as they left the house. the front door shut behind them.
"are you worried he's gonna bite you or something?" damien commented as him and his sister fell a bit behind from their parents on their walk to their next door neighbor's home.
"fuck off." she shot him a look, speaking low so that neither her mom or dad could hear her choice of words. "i don't wanna talk about it." she actively ignored him thereafter, as all four of them approached the front steps and door of the biersack's house.
tucking the glass pan under her arm and leaning it on the side of her hip, mrs. fawn carefully opened the glass storm door and pressed the little button to ring the bell. footsteps from beyond the door came quickly, unlocking and opening it up.
"hi." the bubbly, blonde woman behind the door sing-songed as she grinned and greeted the family, offering to take the dish from her guest as she let them all into the house. "so great to see you again."
"we've been looking forward to it." she accepted the hug from amy's open arms. the family piled into the entryway as she led them, re-introducing them all to her husband as he came around the corner from the hallway.
"andy, come downstairs, please!" dahlia flinched as mrs. biersack's voice raised to call for her son, before she followed after the family she'd invited in. no one responded.
dahlia and damien sat quietly next to each other at the dining room table as the adults stood in the connecting room and started on a conversation they weren't entirely interested in being involved in. dahlia's eyes darted around, twiddling with her fingers and swinging her feet slowly.
