"we are so young. our lives have just begun,
but already we are considering
escape from this world."

"as my bones grew, they did hurt. they hurt really bad. i tried hard to have a father, but instead i had a dad." the lyrics to 'serve the servants,' the first track of nirvana's final studio album played from the brand new vinyl record spinning on my turntable. the sun was beginning to set through my window that saturday night when the girl next door had wandered into my bedroom, excitedly picked the record out of my collection, and wrapped me completely around her finger.

she laid beside me as the music echoed around us, her bright blue hair spreading across the messy comforter beneath both of our backs. her impossibly green eyes pulled me into their webs and rendered me helpless. any of the words i had left in my head to continue the back and forth we had going disappeared into thin air.

i found myself completely lost in her every little feature; the little freckles on her nose, the seemingly permanent pink blush on her high cheeks, how the color matched so perfectly with the one that filled in her shaky, pillowy lips.. impulse took over me for just long enough to draw my hand forward, fingertips brushing against the strands of hair that framed her profile and tucking them behind her ear. i inched my own face closer to hers, filling with the anticipation of knowing how her warm mouth would feel on mine, only to feel my blood run cold in the blink of an eye.

the sound of my mother's voice echoed up the stairway and carried underneath the doorframe of my bedroom, beckoning us both downstairs for the dinner i'd almost forgotten was the whole reason dahlia was there in the first place.

she immediately sat up straight at the call, fixing her sweater and brushing out her hair with her fingers. i hesitantly lifted myself up, trying to wish away the embarrassment and frustration as i squinted my eyes closed. when i allowed them to open again, i caught her gaze on me, both of us clearly trying to push through the awkward tension.

"um," she hesitantly brought herself to her feet, tugging on the bottom of her pullover to cover the tops of her thighs. "i guess we should.." she faded off, her bright eyes flicking between me and the door.
