"drown every sense you own
for the girl that you love;
girl you loathe."

"i know that face." i muttered with all of the gentleness i could find within myself, scooting closer to the blue haired girl sat on my bed with her head in her sketchbook. it laid open across her tucked up legs, just big enough to cover the whole span of the tops of her thighs. "you haven't said a word in twenty minutes." she glanced at me for only about half a second as i came up on her side, but just long enough for me to catch the glimmer from the ceiling light in her waterlines. "what's wrong?" i asked. her hair fell over her face as she tried to submerge herself back into her pages and ignore me.

"i'm fine." she curled further into herself, the sound of her sniffling nose and shaking voice in the now awfully quiet room speaking louder than her words. she'd gone completely silent while i was rambling on and on about the shoot i had just officially found out the band and i were heading out to l.a. for in the coming weeks; the music video for knives and pens, our first real single. "i'm sorry. i promise i'm listening." her voice was meek and small as she apologized, not doing too great of a job convincing me. "i'm sorry." she repeated.

i looked closely at her as the seconds slowed to my eyes, watching her hands shake as she penciled in shading on the drawing she'd been focused on since she'd sat down that night; a cartoon-ishly sketched, short haired girl in a red dress and black boots, with little round spots of blush on her cheeks.

the beds of her fingers were pink and irritated from a few of her cuticles being torn, which immediately told me she'd been unconsciously scratching at them until they bled out of anxiety.

"dahlia." i said, immediately feeling her shoulders tense at the sound of her real name. she knew i was being serious if it ever dared to leave my mouth. she was darkening what looked like a pair of scissors in the girl's fingers when i snuck my hand under her face, carefully pulling her head towards me by her jaw. her hair fell naturally off of her features and revealed the truth she wasn't telling me. "please don't lie to me." i looked between her quivering lip and her teary eyes as i spoke with the softness i knew she needed from me.

her cheek felt almost as if it could've burnt my hand as it relaxed into my palm. the tears began to fall like rain from a dark cloud.

"oh, honey." my heart dropped at just the sight, reaching for her as she dropped her things and fell into me. "i know. c'mere." i pulled her in close, settling her in the space between my open legs, squeezing her tight as she buried her head into my chest. "poor thing." my hand rubbed gently up and down her back as she tried to silence her tears into my shirt. "i think i know what this is about." i muttered into her soft hair as i gently kissed the top of her head.
