"taehyun, there's mail for you!" his mother yelled from downstairs. taehyun frowned, mail? no one ever sent him mail since, well, you don't really need to write letters to reach someone.
taehyun left the comforts of his bedroom and downstairs to retrieve his mail. his mother smiled at him, "it's good to see that you leave that goddamn room once in a while, you know?"
taehyun scoffed, "i go out every day for school, mom."
"still." his mom laughed. taehyun shook his head and chuckled at his mom. she's not wrong, though. he refrained from going out a lot of the times just because almost everywhere in seoul reminds him of beomgyu. it still hurts like a motherfucker.
but when taehyun flipped the envelope to reveal his name, he felt his heart break into another million pieces. he could recognise this handwriting every where due to all the study sessions the two had before every exam season they had in those three years.
it's from beomgyu.
"m-mom! i'm going to soobin's!" taehyun yelled and without waiting for his mom's approval, he grabbed his keys, put on his shoes and left the house. he needs someone by his side when he reads this.
he ran towards soobin's house, which was not that far away, and panted as he kept on knocking on the door. it's a saturday, so his parents wouldn't be home, which was convenient.
soobin opened the door and widened his eyes at the state of taehyun, "oh my god, what's gotten into you?" he chuckled.
taehyun didn't utter a single word. instead, he just showed the envelope to soobin. soobin's chuckle died down, "wait, isn't that—"
"it's from beomgyu." taehyun said between pants. soobin ushered taehyun to come in and he dialled yeonjun and kai almost immediately. he offered taehyun some snacks and drinks but taehyun denied them all, only wanting to open the letter.
a few minutes later, yeonjun and kai arrived at soobin's house and they were immediately told to go into the living room. they all huddled around taehyun and with their nodding and words of encouragement, taehyun opened the letter.
my dearest taehyun,
i'm so sorry for leaving without saying anything. i don't know when this will get to you but i do hope it does quickly. i just want to say sorry to you. i'm so sorry for hurting you so, so badly. and i'm sorry that i could never be the boyfriend you wanted me or i wanted me to be. i'll never be able to love you to my best because of my stupid phobia. i hope you understand. even if you don't, it's fine.
in all honesty, i was furious at you for breaking up with me. we were in love for three years! why would someone just break up with the person you were in love with for three years? i didn't understand your decision at all. but now i do. and i realised it was all on me. i'm really sorry for ruining what we had. what we had was beautiful, precious and everything i ever wanted.
i know this is just a short letter but i hope my feelings did get through to you. i love you, kang taehyun.
thank you for being one of the best things that happened in my life.
with love,
beomgyu
by the end of the letter, taehyun was sobbing. no, he was crying, like, full on crying. soobin was trying his best to comfort the younger as yeonjun went over to soobin's kitchen to grab some water and snacks. kai, not knowing what to do, just sat there. after a while, kai climbed up to the sofa and sat next to taehyun, rubbing the other's back as an attempt to comfort him.
"fuck you, choi beomgyu." taehyun choked on his tears as his grip on the letter grew tighter, "why did you have to make me cry so much even after we broke up?"
kai hugged the older tightly, "it's okay. let it all out, taehyun."
and taehyun did. he felt kai's shirt getting damp and he felt bad about it. taehyun was about to pull away so kai's shirt doesn't get more soaked but kai only hugged him even tighter. among seeing this, the two eldest boys smiled at the sight of it. it was relieving to know that kai supported taehyun so much.
"you'll be okay," kai muttered into taehyun's ear, "you'll be okay, okay?"
taehyun sniffed and patted kai's back to signal the younger that he can let go now. kai slowly let taehyun go and the blonde smiled softly at kai, "thank you for that."
kai beamed, "no problem at all, taehyun!"
soobin shook his head and handed a tub of ice cream to taehyun, another tub to kai, "now who wants to binge watch all ten seasons of friends?"
"me!"
"yes, hyung, yes!"
"oh god, binnie, what did we get ourselves into."
and so, the four best friends watched all ten seasons of friends at one go and they laughed, cringed, criticised and cried at the correct moments. it was nice, just the four of them, sitting there, enjoying the afternoon.
for a moment, taehyun seemed to forget beomgyu.
it was just for a moment. a very, very brief moment, when his mind clicked off the 'missing beomgyu' section. but it was more than enough. it was enough that taehyun had moments while watching friends that he just didn't remind himself of the older.
because this means that he's getting over him. bit by bit, yes, but he's making progress.

i want my friends to binge watch friends with me when i'm heartbroken. like that's such a great solution. hear that, friends?
