Prompt written by Jellybean Queen:
"You have to relive the day until you don't die."
I quickly jog through the streets. I look down at my watch as the time clicks to 8:11. I start to run faster. I burst through the back doors of the bank, hanging my coat on the hook in the back room and putting down my purse. I fix my hair as I walk out to the front counter. I hear the booming voice of my boss come from his office.
"Lexie! You're 15 minutes late!"
"Sorry!" I yell back.
I take my seat next to Laurey.
"You're lucky we work at a bank that gets basically zero action." She tells me.
"I'm lucky I work here at all." I get as comfortable as I can in the chair.
"Yeah well you're also lucky this place is desperate."
We sit for hours, a steady stream of no people come in. At about 3:55 right before we close, a man, about 20, my age, comes into the bank. His face is full of worry and concern.
"You need to get out. Now." He frantically tells us, but behind his voice I still hear how serious he is.
I look over at Laurey and she looks back. The same confused face as me playing on her face.
"Sir, I think you need to calm down." Laurey tells him.
"No. No, you don't understand. I've been here before and you die." He tells us.
"Sir, I think you need to leave." Laurey says, her voice sharp.
Before he can even respond multiple people come in. Their eyes look crazed and their muscles twitch in unnatural ways. I look over at Laurey, I make eye contact and tilt my head to the back door. We slowly begin to back up. I hear Laurey let out a small yelp and I slowly turn around.
Laurey has backed into a large man. He's at least 2 feet taller than we are, towering over us. Our boss comes out of his office.
"What the hec-" but he's cut off by a bullet going through his chest.
I let out a yell, jumping back. He falls to the floor. Another gunshot rings through the air and Laurey falls to the ground.
"Laurey!" At this point my hands are shaking and tears are streaming down my face.
The man comes up to me and holds the gun in front of me. I begin to back up.
"Please." I plead for him to stop.
I trip falling onto my back and I begin to drag myself across the floor.
"Please don't"
He stands over me and I put my hand up and then he pulls the trigger. I hear the gunshot and I jump back a little. But, when I open my eyes, I'm in bed again.
"What the heck." I whisper.
I get ready and rush out of the apartment. I jog to the bank, late. I burst through the back doors of the bank. I hang my coat on the hook in the back room and fix my hair as I walk out to behind the front counter. I hear the booming voice of my boss come from his office.
"Lexie! You're 15 minutes late!"
"Sorry!" I yell back. Dejavu swirling through my mind.
I take my seat next to Laurey.
"You're lucky we work at a bank that gets basically zero action." She tells me.
"I'm lucky I work here at all." I respond, absentmindedly
"Yeah well you're also lucky this place is desperate." She says back.
I sit down in the chair, confusion still the only thing on my mind.
"Hey, you ok?" Laurey asks me.
"Yeah, just tired, I guess."
And the same thing happens again. The man comes in warning us. Laurey asks him to leave. The men come in and kill us. I wake up in my bed. It happens again, and again, and again.
I walk out from the back room and sit down in my chair, have the conversation with Laurey, and wait. I wait for the man to come back. He rushes into the bank again.
"Guys. You need to leave." He tells us, again.
I walk up to him.
"Who are you? And what the heck is going on?" I half yell at him.
He looks at me, confusion written all over his face.
"Lexie, What are you doing?" I hear Laurey ask from behind me.
I turn around to face her. "You trust me right?"
"Yeah."
"Then you need to leave. If you don't you'll get hurt"
She has worry in her voice. "Ok." She whispers.
She rushes into the back room and I hear the back door open, and then close behind her. I face back towards the man.
"It's happening to you too."
"How many times have you lived this day." I ask, ignoring him.
"Uh, at least 50." He tells me.
"Why is this happening?"
"I don't know." He says.
"Why do you always come back here? You could live and not come to the bank but you do every time."
"I don't let people die for no reason."
"Who were those people? The ones that shot us."
"I'll tell you later we need to leave."
I nod. "Ok. come with me."
We quickly leave the bank through the back door, weaving through the streets towards my apartment. I let him in and lock the door behind us. I sit down on the couch and he does the same.
"Those people." he begins before I even ask. "Are after people like us. I don't know why we can relive the day but I have been for a long, long time. If you survive the day it never repeats, but when you die that day resets."
"Wait, so if I live today but die tomorrow, only tomorrow will restart?"
"Yeah."
"And those crazy people try to kill us, Why?"
"We are changing time and they don't want it to change."
