WALKING INTO the BAU a few minutes late isn't unusual for you, but everyone's eyes set on you as you exit the elevator is.
The sudden attention gives you goosebumps that you can't prevent, rubbing your cold hands over your arms to try and help. It doesn't, considering it is snowing outside. The scarf you wear is barely keeping you warm, nevermind your own bare skin.
You stalk over to your desk and sit down, throwing your bag under the table and placing your scarf on the desk, trying to avoid everyone's gaze. You untuck the hair from behind your ears to cover your face when you spy Hotch in his office, in distress and pacing. He finally catches your eye, and there's something you can't decipher about his look.
Garcia is the next to find your eyes, her usual bubbly personality nowhere to be found. She is acting worse than when her and Morgan are fighting, and that scares you.
Finally, after the silence has loomed on for too long, you give up and start typing at your computer. You think everyone will give up and go back to doing their business, but they don't. Clenching your jaw, you stand up from your desk and begin to walk away, a sudden desire to get out of the embarrassment chamber rising.
Your plan was to head to the toilets, stay there for a few moments until everyone gave up their stupid stares. Doesn't everyone understand that crowds isn't something you deal with? The team knows that, but perhaps not the rest of the unit. Your plan to leave is interrupted when the news catches your attention, a breaking story emerging.
'Breaking news! Serial killer Darren Williams, also known as 'The Destiny Killer', has escaped from prison and is now on the run. The man who reached a body count of 12 before being caught is now loose in the city. Williams is said to have a daughter working with the FBI who helped catch him, so who knows, maybe he'll go after her next-'
The tv is muted as you turn your head in Reid's direction as he holds the remote, your glossy eyes making it hard to see. There's a certain look in his eyes that you know to be the only anger he has in him, and you watch as he glances at you sympathetically.
Reid has always been there for you, your love of science and statistics helping you bond when you joined the BAU three years ago. Since then, your relationship evolved from science nerds to science nerds who are best friends, which Morgan often judged.
But in this moment, you can feel every single pair of eyes on you. You know they all know your name. You know they know who you are. And most of all, they know what your father did. It came with the name - no, not the name you have now. Not the legally changed name. No, your birth name;
Y/N Williams.
