Behind the Smile

Why are you smiling? 

I'm smiling because I wrote this in the period between night and morning in the dark

I'm smiling because you're smiling and I feel I should 

because if I don't you might think there's something wrong -

I'm smiling because I don't know what else to do 

because right now my smile hides how confused and empty I feel 

I'm smiling because my life isn't bad and I'm not saying I want pity

because I don't know why I feel this way 

I'm smiling because I'm not depressed and feeling sorry 

HONESTLY

I'm smiling because I love who I am and the things I can do 

because when I don't it doesn't mean I'm upset

I'm smiling because I think I got this 

because sometimes I want to cry but can't 

I'm smiling because maybe if I do you might leave me alone 

because I think best when people think I'm happy 

I'm smiling because he's my daddy and I hate it 

because even though somebody will try to "talk" 

I can't explain it and they don't understand 

I'm smiling because sometimes it feels like the right thing to do 

because...

I barely know how I feel 

and I don't want to talk 

I just want to write 

I smile because I love you and I'm grateful
