In the beginning...

It was bitter. The wind seemed to grasp at my ears and smack my nose with an aggression that matched that of the beast behind me. I stumbled on, tripping over twigs and narrowly avoiding bear traps until... BANG! My ears were filled with ringing, my head, pounding from hitting the floor and legs shaking as I peered over my shoulder. There he was. More than ten times my size, he stood tall, mask allowing him to see and breathe through a single hole central to his face. By his side a lantern hung, swaying in what was, to him, a light breeze. On his other side, his arm was raised, rifle pointed straight at me.

I had to push on.

With a grunt, I pushed myself up, the ringing disorientating me as I lunged on, hoping and praying there was somewhere I could hide just ahead. But who was I kidding? Ahead of me was a large empty field, nowhere to hide or take cover. I was done for. Tears ran like rivers down my face as my eyes landed on the only other object in the clearing.

A cage.

With a strong discontent, I turned towards it, my eyes flickering towards the gun in the Hunter's hand and then returning to the thin cage. I had no other choice. I dragged my feet towards the cage, slipping to the far corner and holding the bars for support. Turning back towards the entrance, I watched as the cage slammed shut, before a rope was pulled, suspending me in mid air, at eye level with the beast. He let out a breath and left. Crossing over the bridge before back tracking a little, breaking it in half so the gap was un-jumpable, just in case. I let out a small sob, raising my hand to the yellow rain cap placed upon my head. I slowly pulled it down, laying it on the ground below me before curling up on top of it. With one last pained sob, I let the darkness consume me.

You may be wondering how I got here, why was I running away from the Hunter in the first place? Well, let me take you back to the beginning.

I had been captured by a wild rat, a HUGE wild rat might I add, and dragged into its small cubby hole under a log. At a desperate attempt for survival, I grabbed a nearby stick, swinging it in front of me and bashing the creature around the head. The sparring went on for a little while before the rat collapsed, leaving me victorious. I emerged, laying the stick to the side of the log and continuing on forwards. I had been walking through these woods for days on end, climbing up trees and sleeping in their branches when necessary, but only when necessary. If I felt I could continue walking through the night, I would, and for the past three days, I hadn't slept. I hadn't eaten either. I had found a small clean-ish puddle so I was hydrated at least, but so... so... hungry. I could eat anything. It was just my luck that a little on the ways I found a shack. It seemed to be abandoned, random cages strewn around the front yard, the window left open, I didn't think twice about climbing on up and entering the house.

I entered into a kitchen. Perfect. With my hunger on my mind, I jumped off the counter and ran straight for the fridge, but being as short as I was, I was unable to reach the handle. Looking around I saw a table, there was food strewn across it and a big pan sat at the side. It was easier to get up there, and I helped myself to some cold stew from the pot. I almost moaned in satisfaction as the sustenance entered my system. I don't think I'd eaten anything this good for months. After having my fill, I continued on my way, pushing through the next door and having a peek around. A door just ahead seemed to lead to the basement, but not on all living hell was I going down there. Instead I continued up the hallway, making a right turn and pushing through a slightly ajar door.

Upon entering, I was frozen in shock! Around a table sat three giant figures, seemingly frozen having a huge meal. They were obviously dead, but the idea that they hadn't been moved unsettled me to the core. I climbed up onto the table, jumping across and onto some shelves before swinging through a small hole, shivers wracking my every nerve. In the next room was another door, also ajar, and some sort of ladder leading up to an attic, and on listening closer, I could hear rustling and stomping coming from the entryway, and thought it best to continue on my way. Pushing slowly through the next door I came outside, a small outhouse on my left and ahead of me a shed. As I got closer I could see newly made prints in the dirt. I best be careful... Entering the shed, I climbed up some cages against the wall, skilfully swinging myself into a small window and into the next room. Through the window was a giant room with what seemed to be animal skins on a table. I tiptoed closer, running my hand over some low hanging fabric and feeling it come into contact with... skin... Human skin had been sowed together, forming a sort of blanket big enough for a bear, and bigger still! I didn't get long to stand there in shock as the door behind me opened, revealing a huge man, rifle over shoulder and lantern in hand staring down at me.

Without hesitation, I ran, out the next door, hiding behind boxes for him to take his shots before sprinting on ahead and hiding again. I got all the way across the bridge, and that's how we got here. Swinging monotonously in the wind, suspended high above the ground, marooned on an island of metal walls, with only a yellow rain hat to comfort me.

Authors Note:

Hey guys! Ramen here!

This is my introduction to my Mono x reader fan-fiction. Now I best make some things clear with you. Due to me being quite a bit older than the characters in the game, I will be making them older as to remove the concept of paedophilia from my book, as I am 16 and the characters are seemingly 9-10 years old. This means I will be making Mono 17 and Six 15 for my story. That won't change anything else about the characters, just make me feel more comfortable about writing this story.

If you have any ideas of cute little interactions that could happen between Mono and yourself, don't be afraid to comment them and if I use them I will cred you in the chapter in which your idea is featured.

Many thanks!
