the plane finally landed and jihoon was more than excited. sure he had his mom to visit who has been miles away for three years, the letter mostly kept him enthusiastic.

he gently pulls out the last strap of minty chewing gum from the packaging and places it in his mouth, feeling the coldness wash over his tongue like an ocean to the beach. he texted his mom saying that he'll meet her outside the airport in about thirty or so minutes depending on whether or not he got his luggage quicker than usual.

when the line of people in the rows start to lessen, he gets up and stuffs his phone in his front pocket, pulling out his hand luggage from the overhead bin and walks out the aircraft, trying to see where the reception desk might be so they could check his passport and let him pass on to the baggage claim.

after dealing with that tedious process that most travel enthusiasts have been through, he drags his tired legs (which were only tired due to the fact that he'd been in the plane without getting up and stood in line for god knows how long- who allowed babies to travel?) to the baggage claim and stands there despite his body already giving up on him.

jihoon's red eyes scanned through the many bags that passed his line of vision until he spots a familiar, shiny red trolley bag and reels it out of the conveyor belt. he then pulls out his phone and texts his mom, saying he'd be there in a jiffy.

finally getting outside to breathe in the fresh air of japan, he sits down on one of the ledges of the building and waits for his mom to spot him as well as keeping an eye out for her.

"excuse me sir, do you know the area in which you have to wait for the people arriving?" a girl with [h/c] hair asks in english with a clear accent. no sign of a japanese one. he blinked twice before nodding and getting up. the girl then realizes the gesture and follows him.

as soon as she plopped down on the seats, she smiled at jihoon and bows to thank him. "thank you, sir." with the little knowledge of japanese he had from the animes he watched, he understood her thanking him.

he gives an uncertain nod in return and goes back to his spot where his mother had already been waiting. he grins and rushes towards her, enveloping the middle aged woman in a hug.

"jihoon, this decision of yours is impulsive, you know?" his mother sighed, pressing a hand to her forehead but a small smile could be seen. jihoon brushes it off, "i mean, i'm already at the top of my classes it's fine if i miss a semester." his mother smacks him in the head, earning some surprised glances from nearby civilians.

"you're lucky you do have good grades, otherwise your father wouldn't have been so keen on letting you stay here for a while. also, do you really have your own apartment?" she says before rolling his bag towards the parking lot. jihoon trails behind her.

"dad told me it was time i," he changes the tone into a deeper one, mimicking his father, "'turn into a man', or whatever that meant." he chuckled at the memory. his mother opened the car with her keys and he hopped in the front seat, cringing at how hot it was.

his mother groaned at the temperature but they had to suck it up since it was spring time anyway and although it wasn't that hot, it was still annoying. they really didn't need butt warmers today...

"oh right, ma," he started, "there's this message in a bottle i found the day before my flight and it was pretty cool." his mother raised an eyebrow, "what was it about?" jihoon chewed on his gum for a moment before replying with, "bittersweet love letter."

"hm, you think you'll encounter one again?" jihoon laughed, "i sure hope so. i wanted to know more about what happened."

and it was true. jihoon wanted to find out more. even if he never found the next letter at the sea again, even if he was never involved. as long as he found out more, his mediocre life can finally mean something.
