The last two days had sucked for Sophie so far. Ever since she discovered that she'd met her parents murderer she didn't know how to feel.
Was she supposed to be mad? Furious?
On top of that Sophie didn't even know if the police had managed to apprehend him. Four years ago hadn't the police already caught him after he'd killed her parents? Or had he escaped? And two nights ago, had he managed to escape again?
Sophie felt like an empty shell, she was living through everyday life, but she just wasn't... present. Her adoptive parents and little sister, Amy were starting to worry. But there was no way she could tell them. That would mean she'd have to tell them about her fighting crime and she couldn't do that. At least not yet.
It was a Tuesday and Sophie was halfway through the school day. Once her Acc ELA class ended she headed over to lunch where she sat down by Dex and Jensi, two of her best friends.
"Hey, Sophie," Dex greeted her with a dimpled grin. "How you doing?"
Sophie forced a smile. "I'm fine."
Dex didn't look convinced, but he left it at that. Sophie hadn't told him about her discovery. She just wasn't ready. Not yet.
"Anyways, Jensi how're you?" Sophie said, changing the subject.
Jensi's wide smile and curly brown hair made him look even more optimistic and friendly than he actually was.
"Oh, I'm amazing! After school today my brother and I are going to go skateboarding to this new park. Did you know-"
Sophie tried to listen, but she just couldn't pay any attention.
Before she knew it the bell rang and she was heading towards her next class.
"Sophie!" Dex called behind her.
She turned to face Dex. "Yeah?"
"I'm worried about you. You seem exhausted. You aren't acting like yourself. You're barely talking to anyone. Was it something that happened on Sunday night when you went to the bank heist? What happened there?" Dex asked.
Sophie looked down at her feet. "Dex I-I'm not ready to talk about it. But seriously I'm fine." Even as she said it she couldn't even manage to convince herself.
Dex looked at her. "Okay. Take all the time you need. But remember you can talk to me, okay? If you need anything I'm here. And if this fighting crime thing is becoming too much for you, stop. You need to take care of yourself."
Sophie hugged Dex, "Thank you for being such an amazing best friend."
Dex hugged her back, "No problem."
Sophie pulled away and said a quick goodbye to Dex before she left for her next extremely boring class.
The rest of the school day Sophie was processing what Dex had said. And if this fighting crime thing is becoming too much for you, stop. Honestly, that sounded pretty amazing at the moment. She could take a small break and have some time to herself. Then maybe she'd go back to helping out with the crime situation.
By the end of school, Sophie had decided to stop fighting crime for the moment. What good was she to the police or others if she could barely function?
As Sophie drove back to her apartment in her truck she put on some rock music.
For the first time in days she was finally starting to relax, but of course it just couldn't last a second.
