Sonny was a mere six years old when her father, Ross Thompson passed away. He was driving home after a late night from work when he was rear-ended and was rammed into the car in front of him, dying on impact.

The man that had rear-ended Ross was a teen coming home drunk after a party and was charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, killing Ross and three people in the car in front of the Thompson man.

After hearing the news about her husbands death, Julie Thompson was absolutely heartbroken to say the least but still made sure she was there for her six and twelve year old daughters. The three had learned how to live without Ross Thompson around the house, still missing him completely but knowing he was in a better place kept them all sane.

When Sonny was thirteen, her life crumbled even more.

Her mother was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Because of the death of her husband, Julie she ignored the symptoms, shaking them off as grief or simply a broken heart. After five months of different kinds of treatments and medications, Julie Thompson passed away leaving her daughters alone in the world.

Jess was nineteen years old when her mother died, making her legally Sonny's guardian. Jess wasn't planning on going to college, she wanted to travel and explore, she was planning to when she turned twenty but now, she was taking care of her thirteen year old little sister.

Even though their lives were flipped upside down, Jess tried to make her and Sonny look as fine as possible, making sure to show up to their country clubs events even though they can feel the pity stares burning into the sides of their heads as they passed the mothers that sat in lawn chairs by the pool and Jess made sure that no matter how heartbroken Sonny was, she never lost touch with her two best friends; Demetri and Eli.

Sonny had met Eli in kindergarten. The two were in separate classes but everyday during recess, Sonny would see him sitting alone by the swings while she played alone at the monkey bars. After one week of seeing no one walk up to the boy, she did, taking the swing next to him and going as high as she could, urging the boy to join her and after a few minutes of watching her, he did. And after that, the two became best friends, meeting Demetri a year later in the first grade, the duo became a trio but in the end, Sonny was still always Eli's best friend and he was hers.
