My mind tried to absorb everything Nancy blurted out on the 20-minute drive to school, but I kept battling truth with fiction. While I couldn't believe that the other night happened, the thought of a girl with magic powers trying to save Dustin's friend who is trapped in an alternate reality just seemed to be a little too far-out.
As Nancy's sentences uncontrollably meshed together, I began to put the pieces together as to why she seemed so strange at the party, and why her and Steve seemed to oddly close (and Nathan didn't seem to mind). As we pulled in to the parking lot, Nancy tried to regroup as she talked the entire way here. Distracted by seeing Steve beginning to emerge from his car, Nancy quickly changed subjects.
"So, Steve!" She nervously exclaimed, jerking the wheel and almost sending us right into the row of cars to the right.
"Jesus, Nance!" I gripped the side of the door in quick panic. Taking a deep breath and looking at her once more to make sure she was in the right state of mind to pull into a parking spot, I eased my posture. "What about him?"
"The way he's been with my brother-, and yours and well, the way he's been with this whole situation..." Nancy's mood changed as she slowly parked and turned off the car. "There's something there, still." She sighed and thrust her head against the headrest, slowly turning towards me. "I feel awful."
"I'm no relationship guru," I joked, thinking about my failed dating life and my current situation with Billy, "but if you still have feelings for the devil himself then you need to do what's right with Jonathan." I gingerly laid my hand on her shoulder; the wool tickling the creases of my hand. "You can do it."
Nancy's face became red with nervousness and embarrassment as she sighed once more and mouthed the words "save me".
"Are you and Billy a thing?" Nancy randomly blurted out, looking dead into my eyes. I slowly retracted my hand from her shoulder, frantically thinking quick and hard about the answer to that question.
"Uh," I hesitated, "I don't think we're 'just friends', but I'm not sure what we are right now." I felt my face getting as red as Nancy's was, as I just confessed having feelings for Billy to my best friend.
"I still think he's a douchebag." Nancy replied. "However, I see that he is very protective over you and genuinely wants to keep you safe. Who knows, maybe you can straighten him up a bit." Nancy laughed as she gave me a little nudge on the arm and began opening up the car door. A large smile formed on my face as I felt an overwhelming sense of joy in the fact that Nancy didn't freak out or make me feel awful about admitting that Billy and I were moving closer to being an item. My nerves subsided as I got out of the car and swung my backpack across my arm.
"My two, favorite people!" the all-too familiarvoice of Steve quickly drew near as he rounded the corner of the van parkednext to Nancy's station wagon.
