Steve walked off the Quinjet expecting to be greeted by Bucky, like he usually was after a solo mission, but he was nowhere to be seen. He figured he was working out and just lost track of time, Steve walked to the gym and found Sam and Natasha sparring, but no Bucky. He walked to their shared room in search of his boyfriend, and a shower, what he saw when he walked in was not what he was expecting. He walked in to find Bucky sitting on the couch with Gracie tucked under his arm with a blanket wrapped around them reading a book together. Steve was confused to see a child in their room, normally the only small being in there was Alpine, but now there was a child. He cleared his throat and caught both of their attention,

"Oh you're home!" Bucky looked over at his boyfriend and smiled, then he turned and leaned down to Gracie, "Hey doll, why don't you go see if Wanda needs any help with dinner?"

"Okay!" Gracie jumped up and started running towards the kitchen, completely ignoring Steve.

Bucky stood up and walked towards Steve, "Welcome home, I missed you," he wrapped arms around him and gave him a hug, being careful of any possible injuries Steve might have gotten.

"I missed you too Buck." he hugged him back resting his head on Bucky's shoulder. Steve pulled away and smiled at his boyfriend, "So... who is your little friend?"

"That's Gracie," Bucky walked over to the table and grabbed the manila folder that held all of Gracie's files and the mission report "I found her on the mission last week," he handed Steve the files and sat down on the edge of the couch, "the heat signature you picked up on was her, Hydra had left her there to die after we took the base down," Steve sat down on the arm of the couch and flipped through her file, "we brought her back here and Banner saved her, and now I have been taking care of her for the past week, Natasha says she is becoming my mini me," he grinned, chuckling at the thought of having a twelve year old him walking around the compound.

"Says here in Banner's analysis, that she's enhanced?" Steve looked at Bucky, hoping for an explanation.

"Yeah, Bruce said he found the same genetic mutation that he found in me in her, though we're not exactly sure how that affects her yet," he explained as he flipped to another page in the folder, "this is what we hypothesized so far, but we haven't tested anything yet, we don't want to push her into anything."

"I understand that," he read through the list and stopped at the one that was highlighted and in bold, "emotional manipulation?" he questioned, pointing at the page.

"Oh yeah, we think that's our number one theory," Bucky explained, "the first couple of times we were around her, there was a heavy feeling in the air and all of us had felt different waves of emotions all at once," Bucky sighed, he hated that Hydra would experiment on someone so young, but it was Hydra they didn't care, "we think it was a little out of control because she was in a new place and didn't know if she could trust any of us, she used it as a defence, but now it seems to be under control."

Just then, Gracie came running back in the room and ran straight to Bucky, "Wanda told me to tell you that dinner will be ready in ten minutes."

"Perfect, I'm starving," Bucky looked up at Steve and gave him a small smile, "hey Gracie, I have someone I want you to meet," He grabbed her shoulders and turned her around to face Steve, "this is Steve, he's the one that helped us find you," then he crouched down next to her and whispered, "he's also my boyfriend, and I love him very much, but I give you permission to beat him up whenever he does anything stupid." Gracie giggled and looked up at Steve.

"Hi Gracie, how are you?" Steve smiled at her.

"I'm good, thank you for finding me!" Before Steve could react, Gracie was wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her head in the crook of his neck. Bucky sat on the edge of the couch trying to cry watching the two most important people in his life.

Steve pulled away and started speaking to Gracie in a whisper, "Can I show you something cool?" He had noticed the stacks upon stacks of books that were sitting in their room, he knew Gracie loved reading just as much as he did.

This piqued Gracie's interest, she looked at Bucky and he looked just as confused as she was, "Sure!"

"Okay! Hop on!" He gestured for her to get on his back for a piggyback, once she was on he stood up and started walking towards the door, Bucky following close behind to make sure she didn't fall off.

"Where are we going?" she giggled, feeling so much taller than all the other avengers.

"It's a surprise!" He started leading them down a hallway on the far end of the compound, when they reached the end of the hall he opened the door to reveal his secret library that only he and Bucky knew about. He set Gracie down on the window bench, "if you ever want to be by yourself or you just need a space to sit and relax, you are welcome to come and hangout in here," as he was explaining everything to her she was looking around the room like she was in heaven, this room was paradise to her, "but there's one catch, no one else except for Bucky and me, and now you, knows about this room, so you can't tell anyone, you got that?"

Gracie nodded her head and stuck her hand out, "I pinky promise I will never tell anyone." Steve looped his pinky with hers and nodded.

As all of this was unfolding, Bucky stood leaning against the doorway, tears in his eyes, admiring the connection between his boyfriend and the little girl who he had grown so attached to.

~~three months later~~

Since Gracie arrived at the compound, life has only gotten better for Bucky and Steve. Gracie had grown a lot more comfortable with the two of them (and the other avengers), she had even started calling them her dads. After many long discussions, the two boyfriends decided that they would legally adopt Gracie. When they asked her if she wanted to be adopted she was over the moon ecstatic, she had read about families in the books she'd read and she always wondered what it would be like to have one of her own, and finally that moment was here. The two people she trusted most were asking her to be a part of their family.

When Tony found out about the adoption he insisted on throwing a party, Steve and Bucky only agreed if Tony would promise to only invite the other avengers and their families. When the adoption was finalized, they all celebrated and congratulated the three of them, everyone gave Gracie presents and they gave Steve and Bucky parenting books as a joke, but Tony gave them the best gift of all. He gave them their own private house connected to the compound, so that they would be able to build memories as a family in their own home. Although Gracie appreciated the house, her favourite gift came from her dads, it was a necklace engraved with her new initials, G.S.B.
