"I like you."
You're not actually quite sure what you had expected, but you're pretty sure it wasn't this. Jennie looks as if she'd just looked into Medusa's eyes and subsequently, been turned into stone. Her expression is still, too still; her eyes are wide and she is utterly silent.
You fidget, fingers intertwining and you bite your lip, a wave of anxiety rushing over you like a waterfall.
That day, after school had ended, you'd decided that you wanted to take a walk in the park before you went home and Jennie, being your best friend, had decided to accompany you in case you 'got bored without her'. You'd rolled your eyes but allowed her to come anyways, knowing it was her indirect way of saying she wanted to be in your company a little longer.
The two of you had found a park bench and sat down and after a few minutes of comfortable silence, Jennie began to tell you about something weird that Jisoo and Lisa had done today. You had smiled at her, watching as her eyes lit up and her hands moved and gestured, and her lips drew slowly up into the prettiest smile you'd ever seen.
You had always thought it was cheesy and well, frankly, idiotic, the way people would say that their girlfriend, or their boyfriend, had a smile like flowers and the sun. Jennie proved you wrong. You loved the way her eyes curved into little crescent moons and the way her face performed a little scrunch when she laughed a little too hard. God, her smile could make flowers grow, and no, you're not being cheesy.
Every time she laughed or smiled, you fell a little bit more in love.
Maybe, that's why when Jennie talked about the particularly ridiculous thing that Jisoo had forced Lisa to do today and she scrunched up her face in a laugh, you couldn't help yourself. The words slipped out of your lips, unbidden and finally free.
"I like you."
You watch, hesitant and suddenly scared as the smile fades slowly from your best friend's lips and she swallows, brushing a nonexistent strand of hair away from her face.
"What?"
You're suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to run away, fall into a hole and never come back.
"I like you," you repeat, your voice a little stronger, a little braver. "I like you- I'd like to date you." You watch her face carefully, seeing a myriad of emotions flicker across her face at the speed of light, and cautiously, when you don't see rejection, you add, "Will you be my girlfriend?"
Jennie doesn't really say anything as all forms of emotions vanish entirely from her face. You recognise it as her retreating into her shell but you refrain from doing anything and instead, wait silently. She closes her eyes, breathes, then opens them again and licks her lips. "How long?"
You eye her curiously even as anxiety rushes through you and you feel as if you're about to throw up from the snakes crawling in the pit of your stomach. "Three years," you reply, thankful that your voice holds steady even in the midst of your emotions.
She stares at you for a long moment, then looks away and you notice that she's begun to fiddle with her fingers.
"I can't," she says finally, her voice small.
"You can't what?"
"I can't give you an answer."
You frown, your brows knitting together as confusion flickers across your face. "What do you mean? You can't answer?"
"Yeah," she says, still avoiding your gaze. "I can't give you an answer yet. I just...don't know."
You're still very confused but you can tell from the look on her face that unless you wanted to have her retreat even further into her shell, it was best not ask her to elaborate on her incredibly vague answer.
