Max's POV
"Max!"
Jess ran after me desperately trying to keep up as those from our psychology class who had just heard everything began whispering to friends from other classes about what had happened. I was in shock. My mind was frozen over and all I could think about was her. How could she do this? Why me? What had I done wrong to deserve such a thing?

"Max please!" Jess's voice grew fainter as I marched on barely aware of my surroundings. I had to find her. I had to speak to her.
I was aware of people following me, lapping up all the drama. I suppose this was just like watching an episode of coronation street or eastenders or possibly even Ackley bridge to them.

I turned around to absorb the huge crowd murmuring excitedly and caught a final glimpse of Jess attempting to weave her way through before being stopped by her friend, who I was certain was called Kristen, and pulled away.
I continued on, angry at Jess for telling me so publicly, at Hannah for knowing the information and not seeing fit to tell me, at Mackenzie for cheating and at myself for really believing she was a good person. I wanted to cry. How could I be so stupid?

And then I saw her. Standing there smiling at me. Almost mocking me. The smile wiped clean off her face when she saw my angry expression, saw the voluminous crowd swelling with excitement.

"Max what's happening? What's all this abou..."
"You bitch!" I hissed the words out like venom, surprised by the unfamiliar tone of my voice. Never before had I felt so angry.
"Wha..." she gaped at me in silent shock before composing herself. "Max what are you talking about? Why are you so angry?"
"How dare you. How dare you stand there, feigning innocence, acting like little miss perfect. How dare you lie to me, send me in an emotional wreck for the entire weekend worrying about a responsibility that isn't even mine. How... how dare you!" My voice wavered close to tears. I couldn't bare it.

"Babe. What's this about? What.." Mackenzie looked worried. So she should be.

"So who was it then? Huh? Who did you decide it would be a good idea to cheat on me with and conceive a child with?"
I panted gasping for breath. I could feel my body vibrating, shaking with visible anger that roared inside my head.

"I.. oh god." Mackenzie was trembling now. "Oh no..."
"Oh yes." I growled menacingly. "So? Who was it? Any guesses?" I turned to the crowd theatrically. "Anyone want to place a bet?"
The crowd stayed silent, anticipating the next actions.
"Max.. babe, I.." she reached towards me and I recoiled.
"Don't you dare touch me you slimebag!" I hissed. "Are you going to tell me who it is?"

"I.. I can't." She wept, sinking to the floor. "I'm.. s s so sorry Mm Max please. But I can't tell you."

"Fine. Don't tell me then." I wiped away furious tears leaking from my eyes. "But I want to make myself very clear when I say I want you to know we're finished. We're through. And I never want to see your disgusting little face again!"
I ran off, sobbing uncontrollably, passing blurry shapes unaware of anything until I bumped into something solid.

I wiped my eyes to see Hannah stood in front of me, concern showing on her face.
"Max, Jess just told me what happened. I.. she's really sorry, she's in tears, she didn't.."
"It's not her fault. She didn't make that bitch cheat did she?" I sobbed, feeling my knees give slightly. I felt on the edge of crumpling to the floor but Hannah grabbed me, wrapping her arms around me supportively and patting my back as I cried into her shoulder.

"Shhh, it's ok. Come on let's get some lunch and we can eat in my car away from all of the crowds."

I followed her through the queue of people for lunch, grabbing a sandwich though I barely felt like eating, followed her out to the car park, to her car, into the passenger seat in a complete daze.

"Im so sorry Max.. I don't know what to say. How awful."
"I just.. I feel so stupid. You know.." I wiped my eyes with my hoodie sleeve and took a deep breath. "You know my mum's been pissed at me recently as well. My grades have gone down. Im failing pretty much everything at the minute because I was too focused on spending time with.. her instead of revising and putting effort in. Now I'm well behind and it's all for nothing!"

"Well. I could always help you revise you know. Like tutor you and help you catch up. We might not be in the same classes but we take all the same subjects." She said reassuringly.

"Yeah.. yeah. Thanks Hannah, that would be great."
She smiled at me.
"How about tonight? I was supposed to be going to see the new conjuring film with Harvey but he has rehearsal for his musical exams next week so I'm completely free!" She offered.
"Yeah." I cheered up a little with the prospect of at least something going right for me.

Later that day

I looked at the pages upon pages of history practice exam questions me and Hannah had been working on for the past two hours and felt a sense of accomplishment. Today was the first time in months I'd actually properly paid attention to my work and it showed in the improvement of the quality of my answers.
"Wow. I can't believe it. I'm starting to understand!" I said enthusiastically to Hannah who looked proud.
"See. With answers like that you're guaranteed a B at least so you can tell your mum you aren't failing classes anymore."
"Hannah. I can't thank you enough. I don't know how I can repay you. You've saved me on possibly the worst day of my life!"

As soon as college had ended I had blocked Mackenzie's number as well as all of her social media profiles so she couldn't contact me. I'd also switched my phone off to avoid messages of sympathy from others. The events of earlier seemed like a fading nightmare.

"Do you want a drink? Tea?" Hannah asked, cutting me away from my thoughts.
"Yeah sure." I smiled as she left her bedroom. Wandering around curiously, I observed the items and ornaments in her room. She had pinned up some photos of her and Harvey on a little board and a couple featured me too. There was one from her year 11 prom and one from when we went to Thorpe park. With great admiration, I realised just how long Hannah had been a good friend for me, just how long she had supported me with no judgement.

As she re-entered the room, I felt a wave of affection and before I realised what I was doing I had steered forward and wrapped my arms around her waist, locking my lips into hers. She dropped the tea in surprise and a pool started seeping into the carpet, spreading towards my socks but I was hardly aware. Neither was she, surprisingly not pulling away. As we eventually did, she looked at me slightly breathless and shocked.
"Max." She whispered. "Oh god what are we doing?"
But perhaps the faint guilt inside of her wasn't strong enough because she pulled me in again and I breathed in the scent of her perfume.
"Nobody is home." She half whispered/smirked and leant across her bed shutting the curtains before playfully pulling me onto it.

(Ok I think we all know what happened after that but it feels too weird to go into further detail so I'm sorry but we'll have to leave the rest to your imagination 😂)
