"Melody, you have to pull it together. "Jayce strokes the hair from off my brow, tilting my chin up so he can look into my eyes. I shiver at the sight of his still pointed ears, and sniffle, wiping a hand across my nose. He sighs, scrubbing a palm over his cleanly shaven jaw.

"I know this must be a shock for you, but..."

I don't let him finish, my mind suddenly in fully functioning mode again.

"A shock? Yeah, it's a bit of a fucking shock! Who the hell where those people?" I take a deep breath, pushing myself away from his chest. "Who is Levi? And what the hell does he want with me? Oh, and Jayce Gravety? What the fuck man? Who are you really?"

Jayce sighs at my over load of questions, sitting back on his heels, and sheathing the still bloody sword at his waist. I scoot back on my butt, pulling my coat tighter around my shoulders while eyeing him, waiting impatiently for answers. He avoids my gaze as he begins to speak, monotone.

"You're real name is Melody Klaire Castodian."

I blanch, mouth dropping.

"And how do you know this?"

Jayce looks at me, dead in the face.

"Because your father is Hendrix Castodian. My king."

Wait! hold up. Lets just rewind shall we?

"My father is your king? How the fuck is that possible?" My voice is slowly rising in pitch as I try to comprehend what he is saying.

"He is the king of Kalar." Jayce tries to explain. It doesn't help.

"Kalar?" I blink, dumfounded. I've always prided myself on my natural skill for geography. My mind has always found it easy to remember countries and capitals of the world. But never in my life have I heard of Kalar.

"Yeah, it's a Scene. Similar to earth, but different."

"Scene?" I ask, vocals now near hysterical.

Jayce closes his eyes for a second, breathing deeply. Then reopens them.

"There are three Scenes. Kalar, Earth, and Devilyn. They are what you would call dimensions."

"Dimensions? Like parallel universes?" I'm trying to grasp what he is saying, but my mind is whirling, thinking maybe I should be checked into a mental hospital before I truly go bonkers.

"Yes, Like parallel versions of Earth." He smiles encouragingly. "Except Earth is ruled by people."

I frown.

"And the other two Scenes are not?"

"Well, not exactly." Jayce also frowns, scratching his head. "Kalar is very much ruled by a human, Hendrix Castodian. However, the Protectors of Kalar aren't... human."

"Protectors?" I echo.

"Yeah, like guardians." He explains. "They protect the kingdom and serve Hendrix in whatever way he commands."

A puzzle piece falls into place in my head.

"And I'm guessing Hendrix sent you to protect me."

Jayce nods, smiling.

"Yup, pretty much."

When he doesn't say anything else, I ask nervously.

"So, you're not human?"

I watch his face fall, hands clench at his sides.

"No, I'm not." Before I can ask, he continues. "I am an Elf. Highly skilled at battle and gifted with heightened senses."
