Being the youngest wasn't fun for Princess Eloise Dupree, who could never seem to understand what it meant to be a princess. Being the fifteenth in line for the throne, Eloise never understood why she needed to act like a princess when she would never be able to call the throne her own. There was no need for her to wear the shoes that pinched her toes together or to walk as if there were a stack of books atop her head all the time. She didn't understand why she wasn't allowed to do anything, really.
But being the youngest did mean she got more freedom than her oldest sister, Margaret, who had been groomed for the throne since she could talk. Margaret was always busy with her studies, not yet allowed into the War Councils but also not at all allowed to deviate from her schedule. Then there were the other thirteen, each known for something. Alice had her piano and Grace had her dancing, Julia was good at gymnastics while Kyrie could sing like a bird. Ella was made for fashion while Isabelle enjoyed horseback riding. Lonny, Beatrice, Cindy, and Olivia were all actors while Jessica and Emily played the flute and harp respectively. And Eloise... Well, Eloise could read and write and that was it.
She wasn't exactly memorable seeing as the Herald once forgot to announce her at a family ball and she wasn't exactly handsome, at least not enough to tempt those around her. She was extraordinarily average for a princess and that's why she decided to run away. There was no need for an average princess when there were fourteen other perfectly talented ones, she thought as she snuck around inside the palace walls. She took a left turn, finding the doorway she'd scoped out the night before.
Sticking her hooded head out of the opening, she looked left and then right and then left again, and when she was sure the coast was clear, she ran through the open space between the castle and the woods. The trees cast shadows large enough to hide her once she'd made it through, breathing through her nose in case there were any late-night patrollers in the woods.
Once she'd made it far enough away, she found herself able to relax. Behind her, if she cared to look, she would have found the alarms being raised as the searchlights panned over the empty expanse of space around the palace, all looking for her. But she didn't care enough, which is why she pushed on. Eloise was determined to leave and to never look back. That was what the stories always told her, don't look back. Resist the temptation and press forward.
And so, with her resolute strong, she pressed forward into the night.
