Tyson was startled awake by distant sounds that managed to penetrate the veil of sleep for the simple reason that he was on guard even while sleeping. It was what he always did without really thinking about it.
When he found himself in an unfamiliar place, his senses were on high alert, even if he was just at a friend's house or a new hotel room. This was especially true for his sleeping hours.
While at home, he slept so soundly that nothing could wake him up. However, when away, even the gentlest of whispers could rouse him from sleep.
"Marcus, wake up," Tyson whispered.
As he started shaking his friend awake, he began observing their surroundings by the dim light of Marcus's phone. He was looking for any signs of danger, and though he found none, he still felt uncomfortable by what he saw.
"It's too early. Let me sleep," Marcus mumbled.
"There is something wrong. This place is furnished. How can a hole in the wall have a bed and even a desk?" Tyson asked, scanning their surroundings.
It felt to him as if the owner could come back at any moment, and he was sure no one would appreciate the intruders in what seemed to be their home or at least their shelter.
The place wasn't big, but there was still enough room for a small bed, a desk, and a chair next to it. Even a smaller hole carved in the ground stocked with food.
"What is this place?" Marcus asked, rubbing his eyes.
"I think this might be someone's shelter from the monster, and we are intruding. If they find us here, we might be in even more trouble." Tyson said.
"Is that why you woke me up?" Marcus asked, stretching as much as the confined space allowed him.
"I almost forgot. I thought I heard something. Can you hear anything?" Tyson asked, straining his ears for the buzzing sound that rose him from sleep.
"Not really, but I am still half asleep," Marcus said, yawning loudly.
"Shh," Tyson said.
"What is it?" Marcus asked.
"I think the sound is coming from there," Tyson said, pointing at the opposite end of the room.
"I don't see anything," Marcus said, turning on his torch.
"Turn it off! They might see us. We don't know how this works yet." Tyson quickly exclaimed.
"What are you talking about?" Marcus asked sleepily.
"I think there is another portal next to that hole we came through. Its buzzing woke me up," Tyson said.
"Was that there when we got here?" Marcus asked, confused.
"I don't think so. I believe I would have heard it. Besides, when I wake up at night, it's usually because of some change in my surroundings, and this must be that change," Tyson said thoughtfully.
Though he appeared sure to Marcus, who often immediately accepted everything Tyson said as the truth, Tyson doubted whether his conclusion was a good one or just a delusion. As far as he knew, the whole ordeal could be one big illusion conjured up by their drunk minds.
"What should we do? This place is nice, but I don't think I want to meet the owners. Maybe this thing will lead us back home," Marcus said.
"I don't think so, but I also don't think it's a good idea to stay here," Tyson said.
"Yeah, but I do wish we could eat something," Marcus said.
That was when Tyson remembered that he hadn't eaten anything since the whole ordeal started, and they needed their strength. Thus, he rummaged through the supplies in the strange shelter, taking only the essentials.
