The question and the utter heartbreak that Anastasia was experiencing made Tyson doubt everything. That included their role in the time traveling business. What if he was wrong, and they were supposed to stop things from happening? What if they were supposed to save people from their cruel and unjust destinies?
As Anastasia's shaking and heart wrenching sobs eventually subsided, Tyson decided to try something that he would probably end up regretting. He decided to try to help her.
"Where do these tunnels lead? Do you know?" Tyson gently asked when it seemed that the pool of Anastasia's tears had run dry.
"Everywhere. These tunnels were supposed to be our escape route, but they caught us by surprise. I was already in the tunnels exploring them when they came. That's the only reason I am here and not out there with my family," Anastasia said, raising her head for the first time in what felt like hours. "Why do you even care when you are just planning to do nothing and let my family die?"
"I was thinking that maybe we can try and save them if we know where exactly the tunnels go," Tyson said with uncertainty.
The last thing he wanted was to give the poor girl false hope, but for some reason, he felt like he needed to at least try. He couldn't stand to just watch another family crumble to pieces when there was something he could do to potentially change their fates.
"Ahem, Tyson, didn't you say that we shouldn't change history and that if we do, we'll get into a lot of trouble?" Marcus asked, confused.
It was very unlike Tyson to break his own rules, and it made Marcus worry yet again that there was something off with his friend. And with his memory still spotty, Marcus wasn't ready to take on any unnecessary risks. He thought that those people had died once, and if they were to die again, it wouldn't change much for them, but it would change everything for Marcus and Tyson if they ended up joining them.
"Yes, but what does it make us if we don't try to help someone who needs our help?" Tyson asked.
Marcus could tell that there was far more to it than just helping someone in need, but as hard as he tried, he couldn't come up with any valid reason why Tyson would risk their lives for a random Russian girl.
"What are you guys even talking about? You sound insane. How can you change history when it has already been written? You're making no sense at all," Anastasia said, her spirit higher than it was in a while, thinking about the prospect of saving her family.
Marcus was about to spill the beans about everything. He was even planning to use fun lines from the time travel movies. However, Tyson ruined all his plans by doing the smart thing, changing the subject.
"Don't mind that. The important thing is that we will try to save your family," Tyson said but seeing her bright smile, he felt the need to clear things up for her. "We might not succeed, but we will try."
"That's all I am asking. I know what our odds are, but I can't just sit and do nothing. They are my family. I love them," Anastasia said, swallowing hard as if trying to chase away the worry with that one simple action.
"Alright, first things first, what day is today?" Tyson asked, wanting to know how much time they had to come up with a plan because, at that moment, he had absolutely nothing.
"I don't see why that matters, but it's Monday," Anastasia said, confused more than she had ever been in her young life.
"Oh boy, no wonder I feel so off. Mondays are the worst!" Marcus said passionately.
"That's not what I meant. I was wondering about the date," Tyson said, completely ignoring Marcus's comment.
"Oh, well, I am even less sure why you would need to know that but if you really want to know, today is July 15th, 1918," Anastasia said.
