Tyson wasn't surprised to notice that Marcus had fallen asleep even after all of his promises of staying vigilant. After all, it was not his fault as he was always pampered by everyone else and allowed to shirk his responsibilities. However, what did surprise him was that Cybil was there, standing guard over the two of them, protecting them from the potential threats.
"Sybil, are the Romanov siblings okay?" Tyson asked the moment he opened his eyes.
"If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about them. You have a lot of things to worry about yourself," Sybil said strictly.
"Don't you think you are being a bit too harsh towards us? The world didn't end because we saved a few people, did it?" Tyson asked with righteous anger.
"No, the world didn't end, but your worlds could have ended," Sybil said, exasperated.
"What do you mean by that?" Tyson asked, trying to read Sybil's impassive expression.
"I am not the one to repeat the same story twice, let's wake up the poor excuse for a guard that you have, and I'll tell you exactly what I mean," Sybil said.
"Marcus, Marcus! Wake up!" Tyson yelled, shaking Marcus awake.
"I am up!" Marcus exclaimed, snapping upright. I was just resting my eyes for a few seconds," he said defensively.
"Yeah, right, an army could have barged in here, guns blazing, and you wouldn't have noticed," Sybil said sternly.
"That's not true. Tyson, tell her!" Marcus said poutingly.
"Tell her what?" Tyson asked, confused.
"That I would have heard even the slightest sound and woken up right on time," Marcus said, convinced that what he was saying was true.
"Marcus, she literally could have slit our throats while we slept, so I can't tell such a blatant lie," Tyson said calmly.
Marcus turned from his friend petulantly, but Tyson ignored him. There were more important things to do, such as learn more about the maze that seemed intent on being their ultimate downfall.
"Alright, cut it out, ladies. I need to tell you why what you did was not only stupid but life-threatening as well," Sybil said, switching into teacher mode.
"I think we were the heroes, and you are just jealous that you couldn't be the hero," Marcus said challengingly.
He was angry at himself for failing his duty. However, he unleashed it on other people even though the person he was really furious at was himself. Because he knew that what Sybil and Tyson said was the truth and that they could have been murdered because of him.
"No, you were two idiots messing with something you don't fully understand," Sybil said, angry at their stupidity. "Even the most foolish Mazers are aware that you couldn't and shouldn't change the past."
"But we did change the past many times," Marcus said stubbornly.
"No, you just helped it stay on track. If it weren't for the two of you, there would have been someone else. You can't change the big events. It's impossible," Sybil said.
"What about the Romanovs?" Tyson asked, worry slowly eating at him.
"The history of the Romanov family is debatable to say the least, so you got lucky there. My guess is that they will die sometime in the past but that their bodies will be brought back exactly where they were found in our time," Sybil said.
"But what would have happened if we didn't interfere?" Marcus asked.
"Who knows, but if you, for example, could have killed Hitler before his time, the history, as well as your personal history, could have been totally different. For some reason time fights against changing those pivotal moments in human history," Sybil said.
