Robin couldn't sleep. For hours, she boomerang between scrolling through her phone and staring at the ceiling, until boredom took a toll on her. And so Robin what did what any sane person will do at 4 am in the morning: getting a fringe.
With a pair of craft scissors and some elastics, Robin debated whether she should watch some tutorials before she cut her hair. But then again, she left her phone on her bed. It would take her about eight steps to get there. Shrugging, she proceeds to divide the section that she want to cut. "How hard can it be?"
Several snips and adjustments later, she placed down her scissors and stared at the reflection in front of her. "Fuck." The once silky straight dark brown hair is now choppy, uneven, about an inch above her eyebrows, and would make anyone who laid eyes on it wonder what could possibly have gone through Robin's head while she was cutting her bangs. "I look cute." Unless you're Robin, of course. She combed her new bangs with her fingers, posing in different angles as she checked herself out. "Only a god could look this good in bangs."
To her dismay, however, her school mates did not share the same opinion on her baby bangs. But did she care? Of course not. If Robin thinks she's cute, then she's cute. That was just how it worked.
"I mean, she has a pretty face so it kinda works for her." Lexa pointed out as she observed her bandmate's uneven bangs. It was break time and they were gathered in the cafeteria judging Robin's hair. Meanwhile, the latter eavesdropped on the conversation of the group of girls beside their table. They were planning on hanging out on Sunday for a bible study after church and stuff. It made Robin think of how religion can bring people together, providing them with a sense of belongingness.
"For all you know, I could be bisexual. I just haven't tried girls before."
Juno, who was sitting across from Lexa, took out the lollipop from her mouth and pointed it at the latter. "Why does it matter which gender you like? No one will like you back anyways."
With a scoff at her bandmate's rude remark at the idea of exploring her sexuality for a much larger option, Lexa turned to Carrie. "Hey, Carrie. Wanna hook up later?"
The conversation effectively made Robin avert her attention from the group of students on the other table, and instead lean her head on her best friend's shoulder to listen to whatever it is they were talking about.
"You're not my type." Carrie shrugged, not even bothering to look up from her phone, which riled up Lexa even more.
"I didn't know you had a type. I thought you just fucked anything that moves."
"Alexa, shut the fuck up," Robin mumbled as she closed her eyes, getting comfortable having Carrie's shoulder to rest on.
Lexa raises middle finger at the three of them before devouring the pie in front of her like nothing happened. Their dynamics always baffled their peers as one minute, you'd think they're about to pull each other's hair out, and the next they'd be hugging and laughing.
Just then, the screeching of a microphone was heard throughout the cafeteria, shutting up the chatter for a couple of seconds before it went back to normal.
"Oh no." Lexa looked back and forth between her two bandmates, who similarly had their eyes wide open. A moment of silence passed before the three abruptly stood up and dashed out of the cafeteria, leaving Carrie alone smirking in front of her. "There's no free lunch, my ass."
As a form of entertainment and an attempt to encourage and bring about creativity from the students, the school held a monthly activity where the students can sign up to perform on the stage of the auditorium. Most of the students, being the students that they are, were too shy to volunteer in the activity and so those who joined every month were the shameless ones (i.e. Robin and bandmates) and they're the same people every time. Some would say that if you look up the word shameless in google you would see that it's synonymous to "Robin".
And so they stood on the stage preparing their instruments— Robin with her guitar, Lexa with the drums, Juno with the keyboard, Red with her electric guitar, and lastly, Noelle with her bass. Initially the band was composed of students in the same grade level but as two of them left, Robin had to search for a replacement and ended up taking in Noelle and Red, who were both in their sophomore year.
Once her bandmates gave the okay signal, Robin cleared her throat while she observed the crowd in front of her. She tapped the microphone to test if it was working and when she confirmed that it was, the right corner of her lips tugged up with her eyes sparkling with amusement. Everybody in the school knew what that meant. "I was an atheist until I realized I am God." Why she would say that, none of the audiences could fathom, evident by the collective gasps that erupted. For Robin, however, this was the perfect signal to start.
"My lovers' got humor,
She's the giggle at the funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
'We were born sick', you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes"
She couldn't have picked a better song to rile up the whole school. Sister Joslyn shot up from her seat once she realized what was happening. Why did she not see this coming? The band has been performing worship songs for two months straight, of course this was bound to happen.
"She tells me, 'Worship in the bedroom'
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen, Amen, Amen"
Robin smirks as she heard murmurs from the crowd and her eyes followed another teacher standing up. The two— the teacher and sister Joslyn— were heading to the right side of the stage.
"Take me to church
I worship like a dog,
In the shrine of your lies
I tell you my sins
So you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that--"
All of a sudden, Robin's voice was cut off by the microphone turning off and the sound system halting all together.
"Detention! All of you!" The booming voice of Sister Joslyn echoed throughout the auditorium thanks to the complete silence but it did nothing to prevent Robin and her bandmates, except Noelle, from laughing.
The audacity.
"We didn't even get to finish the first chorus. That's just evil," Robin mumbled as they picked up their respective instruments while the others left it on the stage. Not like Lexa can carry the drum set.
On their way down the stage where Sister Joslyn awaits with her hand on her hip, Robin caught Isabelle staring at her with a look that she couldn't read, leaving her perplexed. She had never seen that expression on Isabelle. At least not when the latter is looking at her.
