Isabelle laid in her bed after having dinner with her father. She always dreaded dinner for it was full of either forced small talk or conversations that put her in the spot. Having survived it for the day, she breathed a heavy sigh. There was nothing left to do now after finishing her homeworks even those due in three days.
"I'm assuming you've finished the chapter dedicated for tonight?"
Isabelle sat up straight, seeing her father leaning by the door way. He looked particularly tired at the moment. "Yes, father. I've read several verses in Luke chapter one."
"Well, do you mind sharing what you learned?"
"No, father. In the verses that I read, as followers of Christ we are advised to believe what we've been taught while at the same time ensuring that we get the facts of our faith right."
Nicholas nodded slowly, a fond smile passing on his face before he straightened up and said his goodnight.
At his departure, Isabelle plopped backwards on her bed once again with a groan. Her eyes darted towards the open door uneasily. She always felt like a ghost was standing there, watching her. Despite the gnawing feeling it brought to her, she couldn't do anything. It was a rule of her father to keep her doors open at all times. She vaguely remember him explaining why when she was a child but the actual explanation escaped her. Not that it matters now.
Another sigh escaped her lips before she stood up and took her pajamas to the bathroom. She would have to do all of this again the next day and it was nothing to look forward to.
Isabelle doesn't know why she's doing this. No, actually, she knows exactly why. Robin. That girl with her stupid jokes, stupid smiles, stupid eyes.
Gym just ended and she was just minding her own business, changing clothes and all that comes after gym but Robin just had to change next to her. Isabelle happened to glance at her left at the same time Robin removed her towel to wear her uniform.
God. Isabelle would kill to have that smooth skin and flat stomach. If she could just touch it and-- Nope. Nope. Not gonna happen. But maybe just once?
To her horror, Isabelle was caught staring. When she lifted up her gaze and met Robin's, the latter was grinning and was saying something. What she said did not register in Isabelle's mind, she didn't even hear anything but if she had to guess it would be some crude joke or something of the same nature.
And so with her face heating up, Isabelle rushed to wear her uniform, not bothering to smooth out the creases or even properly wear her necktie. All she could think of is running away from the current situation.
Snatching her backpack, she quickly went out the changing room, ignoring the goodbyes of her classmates. With quick strides she almost reached the gates but when she pats the pocket of her skirt and found it empty, she halted. She left her phone on the bench.
Isabelle took a deep breath then shook her head. She was being silly. What was that about anyways?
Turning around, she traced her steps back to the gym, a little bit slower this time. Her driver can just wait for her for a couple more minutes. On the way back she criticized herself for being distracted by another person's body. It was envy, she convinced herself. Yes, it was envy. That must be it.
As she turned a corner, she accidentally bumped into someone, making her stagger backwards. Isabelle grasped on the wall to steady herself but instead, her hand came in contact with a small statue, which immediately tipped over and fell on the floor, breaking into smaller pieces.
A couple of seconds of silence passed with Isabelle merely staring at the broken statue before she finally looked up to the offender with a glare. "Of course it's you."
Robin scoffed in offense. "Excuse me? You were the one who--"
"What happened there?!" The booming voice of Sister Joslyn snatched their attention. The Sister stood at the end of the hallway glaring at them-- well, at Robin.
"Don't say anything." Robin muttered, standing beside Isabelle and handing the latter's phone to her.
"But--"
Shaking her head, Robin sighed, waiting for Sister Joslyn to reach them. "Don't. She already made up her mind that it was me before I even say anything."
Isabelle stayed rooted on her spot as Sister Joslyn reprimanded Robin. She stayed still while Robin was told to go to the Principal's office.
The guilt was almost too much that she contemplated admitting that it was her fault but the fear of the consequences if her father finds out overpowered her guilt. And so Isabelle turned around, heading back to the gates, all the while forcing herself to believe that she didn't care.
