The next child was coming today. We had sent the little boy, Luke, to the island almost 2 hours ago, so the new girl should be here any moment now. I checked my notes. Her name is Jenny. I knew that they weren't always able to pronounce their names, so she might respond to a different one, but we have had to teach almost every child that has come back to the mainland what their real names were.

"Dr. Snyder?"

"Yes?" I answered, expecting to hear that the girl had arrived at the dock.

"We haven't seen the boat yet. We have also lost the tracking signal."

I looked up to see my assistant, Dr. Max, with a very serious expression on his face.

"Is this some kind of prank?" I said, watching him dangerously. "Because if it is, you should not have played it." Dr. Max has been working with me for five years. After all that time, he should know that I would not be happy with any jokes. My staff often bet against each other that they could make me laugh. The one that bet I would laugh always lost. I had trained myself never to laugh at work, even when something was actually funny.

Flipping my dark brown, almost black, extremely long braid over my shoulder to my back, I walked quickly over to the dock, my heels clicking against the linoleum floor, with Dr. Max following. When I arrived at the dock, to my surprise, the boat wasn't anywhere near shore.

"WHERE IS MY BOAT?" I roared.

Dr. Max stuttered, "I t-t-told you. W-w-we lost t-t-the s-s-signal."

"WELL FIND IT!" I bellowed, before stalking off.

"Y-y-yes Doctor S-s-snyder. R-r-right away."
